Program Description

This course is a survey of photojournalism and documentary photography trends and practices for editorial publication. The importance of the still photograph as a converyor of information and influence on public opinion is emphasized. Ethical and moral considerations, freedom of the press and the public's right to know are stressed. Participation in this photographic exploration will allow students to experience the cultural, heritage, geographi and historic diversity of Scotland and Ireland. Students will have the opportunity to study photojournalism and documentary photography in the city streets of Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands and throughout the cities of Dublin and Galway Ireland.

map of ScotglandHalf of the trip will be spent in Edinburgh while just living twenty minutes outside of the city at Dalkeith Palace. The palace plays host to the Wisconsin in Scotland study abroad program during the regular school year. The manor home was built in 1711 and is owned by the 9th Duke of Buccleuch. The other half of the trip will be spent in Dublin and Galway Ireland. One of the fastest growing European cities, Dublin, Ireland is now amongst the top 25 cities in the world. Dublin is located near the midpoint on the Eastern Coast of Ireland and is the focal point for much of Irish art and the Irish artistic scene. Located on Ireland's West coast is Galway, the fifth largest city in Ireland. Given the nickname of "Ireland's Cultural Heart", Galway offers many tourist and cultural attractions that are sure to please all visitors.

Courses

Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits. Students will enroll in course number MEDIA 411/611, Photojournalism and Documentary Photography. To receive financial aid in the summer, keep in mind that six credits are required.  

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, international student ID card, housing, local transportation, and flight. Passport fees, most meals and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility

Student will need to have taken MEDIA 204 or 304, or receive consent from Peter Schlosser before participating in this course. Students must be at least sophomore status, have a GPA of 2.0, and be in good academic standing at time of participation. A SLR camera is also required for this course.

Housing and Meals

While in Scotland, students will stay at the Dalkeith house. Housing during the Highlands tour will be in various youth hostels. Housing in the Ireland will be in youth hostels or hotels. Students will be responsible for purchasing most meals.

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid U.S. passport for entrance into Scotland and Ireland. The current passport fee is $100. If students already have a U.S. passport, be sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the U.S.

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
