Program Description
University of Wisconsin-Stout students minoring in Spanish now have an opportunity to gain international experience studying in Spain. Student can choose to begin the program studying intensive Spanish language for the month of September. Then the students enroll in courses at the University of Balearic Islands for fall and spring semesters. The fall semester runs from October to February and the spring semester runs from mid February to June.
Students who successfully complete the courses receive transfer credit from UW-Stout which can be used to meet degree requirements for the H and T degree.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain
The University of Balearic Islands is located on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain. Mallorca is a popular tourist destination in Europe with over 300 miles of coastline, beaches and mountain scenery. It has a mild climate with temperatures ranging from 40-60 degrees in the winter and 70-85 in the summer. It has a diverse culture and many historical sites from the pre-Roman, Roman, Arab and Spanish eras of settlement.
Palma de Mallorca, the capital city, has about 300,000 inhabitants. Its attractive harbor, historic sites and nightlife make it a popular location for study.
The University of Balearic Islands is located in the city of Palma. Nearly 13,000 students enroll in a variety of degree programs such as science, business, social sciences and education as well as hospitality and tourism. The School of
Tourism was founded in 1987 and currently enrolls about 1,500 students. It is housed in a new building with modern laboratories, classrooms and computer facilities.
Courses
Exchange students enroll in at least four courses each semester and receive three transfer credits for each course successfully completed. Areas of study can be found on the UIB's website.

Students meet with their Program Director to select courses that will meet degree requirements at UW-Stout.
Estimated Costs
As an exchange student, an application/service fee and regular tuition and fees will be paid to UW-Stout. All other expenses, including housing and personal expenses are paid directly by students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Costs are subject to change and can vary due to exchange rates, travel to, from and within the host country, and personal spending habits.

Eligibility
This exchange program is open to juniors and seniors in the hospitality and tourism program at UW-Stout. Applicants must have studied at least two years of college level Spanish—preferably 3 years—and must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants will also need approval of their program director and one letter of recommendation from a faculty member. If students choose, they can register for a Spanish language course at the beginning of the semester. The cost is $310, which the students pay themselves.
Housing and Meals
Students are housed in a dormitory on campus for the first month of language study providing time to locate an apartment in the city for the year. Generally students live with other international students and do their own meal preparation in their apartments. UIB does not offer a dining service plan. Students preferring to live in the residence halls may apply.
Passport/Visa
Students arrange their own travel to and from Palma. All students must have a U.S. passport and a student visa issued by the Spanish Consulate in the U.S. Once in Spain, students register with the local police to maintain their legal residence status.

Application Procedures
Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
