The Institute occupies two buildings in the heart of Seville and is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and cafes, which provide the perfect setting for your study abroad experience in Spain. Also noted as the best-staffed study abroad program in Seville, the Spanish-American Institute offers students of all Spanish language abilities a wide range of language, liberal arts and business courses, exceptional student services, home-stays with local families, and educational excursions.

Sevilla, Spain

map of SpainJust 350 miles south of Madrid, Seville (Spain’s fourth largest city) is the most complete personification of Spain’s true spirit in wealth and variety of its art treasures, in its attractions as a city, and in the charm of its inhabitants. The city reflects all the striking qualities that have come to be regarded as typically “Spanish.” Few places can boast such outstanding historic buildings as the Giralda, a Moorish tower with a Christian superstructure; the Alcazar, a Mudejar palace rich in medieval legends; and the Cathedral, the largest in the Christian world. The various city quarters are also quaint, with their narrow, winding streets and tiny squares. Seville is also renowned for bullfighting. The famous Andalusian herds of fighting bulls, the handsome Maestranza bullring, and the Sevillian school of bullfighters are known for their graceful and unequaled style.

Courses

The Seville Program, located at the Spanish-American Institute of International Education, combines coursework, field trips, intercambio partnerships, and home-stays into a coherent, total package. Students study about Spain while living in Spain so that the classroom experience complements, reinforces, and enhances the intercultural experience. The curriculum in Seville is designed to take maximum advantage of the special location and the unique expertise of the faculty.

The summer program has the following options:

Classes are held Monday-Thursday, with Friday-Sunday available for optional field trips and independent activities.

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, housing, most meals, health insurance, and the International Student ID Card. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Under no circumstances will students be allowed to live independently in their own apartments or in any other housing situation that is not approved by and under the direct supervision of the staff at the Spanish-American Institute.

All students must have a valid US passport for entrance into Spain. The current passport fee is $100. If students already have a US passport, be sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US. A student visa is also required for entrance. It will be issued by the Spanish Consulate in Chicago before departure. Once in Spain, students register with the local police to maintain their legal residence status. UW-Platteville will coordinate the process and retrieval of the student visas.
