Program Description
The Office of International Education is offering the opportunity for students to complete the course “Music in Our World” abroad in Scotland and England with UW-Stout’s Dr. Patrick Liebergen. The first part of the course will be taken on-line with introductory materials in preparation for the overseas experience. Students will have thirty days to view the online materials before traveling on May 26 to Edinburgh, Scotland, where accommodations will be provided at nearby Dalkeith Palace. Visits to Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral and the Royal Mile will be enhanced with a presentation of Scottish music. The students will spend one day in the modern Scottish city of Glasgow to enjoy the sights and sounds of important historic places, including Glasgow Cathedral and a concert at City Hall. The remaining days of the program will be spent in London. Guided tours of Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Windsor Castle and the York Gate Collections at the Royal Academy of Music will make for an exciting venue. Additional highlights will include a cruise on the Thames River, viewing the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace and other points of interests in London. Besides spending an evening at Barbican Hall to hear the London Symphony Orchestra perform symphonies by Schubert and Bruckner, the program will also include a performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s theatre district.

Near Edinburgh, Scotland, students will stay just twenty minutes outside of the city at Dalkeith Palace. The palace plays host to the Wisconsin in Scotland study abroad program during the regular school year. The manor home was built in 1711 and is owned by the 9th Duke of Buccleuch. There will be a one-day trip from the
Palace to Glasgow, Scotland. The city has a population of 570,000, making it Scotland’s second largest city. Whether your interest is art, architecture, nightlife, shopping, or sports, it can be found in Glasgow. The final portion of the program will be spent in London. London is an interesting and exciting city where world-renowned museums, galleries and architectural sites are prevalent throughout. Cultural and social events continually take place making London a great place to visit and hear music.
Courses
Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits. Students will enroll in course number MUSIC-132-0S1. To receive financial aid in the summer, keep in mind that six credits are required.
Estimated Costs
Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, international student ID card, housing, local transportation, and flight. Passport fees, most meals and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility
Students must be at least sophomore status, have a GPA of 2.0, and be in good academic standing at time of participation.
Housing & Meals
While in Scotland, students will stay at the Dalkeith Palace just outside of Edinburgh. The final portion of the program will be spent in a centrally located hostel in London, with easy access to the important highlights of the city. Cold breakfast is provided. Students are responsible for their own lunches and dinners.
Passport/Visa
All students must have a valid U.S. passport for entrance into Great Britain. The current passport fee is $100. Students should apply for their passport by no later than January to ensure summer participation. If students already have a US passport, be sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.
Application Procedures
Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
