Program Description map of Scandinavia

UW-Stout students in art, industrial design, engineering and manufacturing technologies have a unique opportunity to understand and incorporate sustainability into their lives, college experiences and future careers through a new course exploring sustainable practices in Scandinavia taught by Jennifer Astwood and Ronald Scozzari.  Students will be exposed to some of the leaders in sustainability and alternative business and manufacturing methods, reinforced by visits to manufacturing facilities, design firms, design + art museums in Denmark and Sweden over spring break.  This semester long course includes three phases: research, field trip, and implementation.

Research: Students will gain knowledge working within cross-disciplinary groups and create a concept for a sustainable product that their team will develop during the semester. Through working within these teams, students will gain knowledge of manufacturing, research, and design methods they may not be currently exposed to within their own concentration. At this time, students will conduct research on current sustainable practices and gain an understanding of the OKALA ecological design course utilized in product design.

Field Trip: The group will explore various cities, art museums, manufacturing plants and residential areas in Denmark and Sweden.

Implementation: The students, after returning from Scandinavia, will implement what they learn into a viable sustainable product.

This course explores sustainability within the manufacturing and design context. We live in a global economy and in this course students will learn tools to have a positive impact on our society. For a course syllabus and detailed itinerary, click here [PDF].
