Program Description
The University of Wisconsin-Stout offers this exchange in cooperation with the Instituto Tecnologio y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico. This program provides participants with an opportunity to improve their Spanish language skills, get acquainted with students and families in Mexico, and learn more about Mexican culture. The Monterrey Institute offers an excellent intensive Spanish language program each term for beginning, intermediate and advanced students who wish to develop their language skills. Students who are fluent in Spanish language can also select from a broad range of regular courses in business, the social sciences, humanities, communication, engineering and many other areas. The Monterrey campus, with an enrollment of 19,000 students, is Mexico’s largest private university. The Southern Association of Universities and Colleges accredits ITESM in the United States and it is a member of the Association of Texas Colleges and Universities. ITESM has had 44 years of experience in teaching Spanish to foreign students. The Monterrey campus has excellent faculty, modern classrooms and residence halls, state of the art computer facilities and many sports and recreational programs. Over 50 bachelors and graduate degrees are awarded in major programs. Monterrey, Mexico
Monterrey, the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon, was founded in the sixteenth century on a plain in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains about 150 miles from Laredo, Texas. A city of four million, it is Mexico’s leading center of industry and technology. Its museums, historic sites, theaters, sports arenas and commercial center offer students access to Mexico’s rich cultural life.
From the northern deserts, to the forest of the south, Nuevo Leon offers an endless choice of outdoor activities. The State is nationally and internationally known for its canyons and is a great place for hunting and fishing. There are contemporary and modern museums, regional traditions, norteño music, archaeological areas and great regional food.
Courses
Certain courses are designed especially for American students, however, students may take regular courses in English or Spanish depending on their language skills and there are several areas of study where courses are offered in English (including all areas of business, engineering and food science). Students will take a Spanish placement test upon arrival and then are assigned to the appropriate level. Each level focuses on vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, grammar and conversation skills.
