Program Description

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Stout have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) in Lithuania. This exchange is designed for students who want an opportunity to gain international experience in Europe while earning credit toward graduation at UW-Stout. It would enable students to experience first hand the cultural similarities and differences of living and studying in another country. This would be an asset when students begin their careers.

map of LithuaniaLithuania is located in Eastern Europe on the east shore of the Baltic Sea. Independence was gained from the former Soviet Union in 1990. Serving over 11,000 Lithuanian and international students, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 55 areas including architecture, aviation, business management, construction engineering, and environmental engineering. Instruction is provided in English in selected programs including business management and construction engineering. Like UW-Stout, the VGTU courses are industry oriented and targeted toward the world of work. The modern classrooms, residence halls, and library provide a pleasant living environment. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University is located close to the center of Vilnius, Lithuania on the Neris River about two hours by plane from Amsterdam. Air, bus, and train service link the city to all the countries in Europe. The population of nearly 575,000 residents, including approximately 60,000 university students majoring in fields such as business, education, law, engineering, medicine, theater, ballet and classical music. After visiting Vilnius’ historic old town, churches, theatres, monuments, parks, and museums, students can take excursions to nearby historical sites such as the Trakai Castle, the Country Life Museum in Rumsiskes, the city of Kaunas, and spend time on the Baltic Sea at Klaipeda. Courses

VGTU Courses offers courses in: Building Services, Thermo, Heating and Ventilation, Law/International Law, Human Safety, Finance Management, Business Finance, Marketing, Management of Personnel, History of Architecture, and the Lithuanian Language, which is highly recommended.

Estimated Costs

Exchange students pay their regular tuition and academic fees to the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Passport fees, airfare, housing, meals, and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. The actual program cost will vary depending on personal lifestyle and current exchange rates.

Eligibility

Junior or Senior with 2.75 GPA and approval from an academic department

Housing and Meals

Students have a choice between living in student hostels or living off-campus. All rooms in student hostels are furnished with 2 beds, one desk, a closet, table and two chairs, with a sink, refrigerator, stove and 2 dressers in every kitchen. Availability of rooms in residence halls is guaranteed, but the accommodation office assists students to find private housing off campus if desired. The campus does have a cafeteria, but students may wish to prepare their own meals.

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid US passport for entrance into Lithuania. The current passport fee is $100. If students already have a US passport, be sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
