Program Description

The study abroad program at the American University of Rome is designed to provide students with the opportunity to live and learn in the “eternal city” of Rome. AUR was founded in 1969 and has a current student population of 515. Students can study abroad during fall or spring semester.

map of ItalyThe American University of Rome campus is located in the ancient and historic city of Rome. Among several historical attractions, Rome is home to the Vatican, Colosseum, and Forum. Almost 4 million people live in the antiquated city of Rome.

Courses

Students choose coursework that can fulfill general education or program requirements. A meeting with the student’s Program Director is required regarding the transfer of coursework. Please review the UW-Platteville and AUR websites below for courses offered. One course is required in the Italian language. Students can choose from courses in Italian Language and Literature, Art History, Communications/Media Studies/Cinema, History, Political Science/International Relations, and International Business. Students will take 12-16 credits per semester at AUR; the Office of International Education recommends students take 12 credits. Students are encouraged to participate in 2 of 3 fieldtrips to Venice, Florence, or Pompeii.

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, and International Student ID Card. Airfare, housing and meals, optional weekend field trips, textbooks, passport and visa fees, and personal expenses are paid directly by the student. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility

Students must be at least sophomore status, have a GPA of 2.5, and be in good academic standing at the time of participation. No prior knowledge of the Italian language is required. Coursework is available from the following AUR departments: Anthropology, Art/Art History, Biology, Business Administration, Cinema, Classics, Communication, Computer Science, Drama, Economics, English, French, History, Italian, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Spanish, and Studio Art

Housing and Meals

Student accommodations will be in furnished apartments arranged through AUR. The apartments will have 2-3 bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen with basic accessories, bathroom, linens, access to washing machines, television, and computer with internet capabilities. For an additional cost, the apartments come with an optional cellular phone.

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid U.S. passport and visa issued by the Italian Consulate in Chicago. A passport is needed to apply for the visa. Therefore, it is imperative to apply for your passport promptly. The current passport fee is $100. If students already have a US passport, be sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US. Students will apply for their visa on their own and it must be done 90 days before departure. You must apply for your visa in person at the Chicago Consulate. However, if you cannot do so, some of the application process can be done at the Honorary Consulate in St. Paul, MN. Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
