Program Description

The University of Limerick’s Humanities Department offers five summer courses for UW-Stout student’s to select from: Irish Life and Literature, Ireland-Gateway to Europe, Irish Society-Between Boston and Berlin, Visual Culture in Ireland 1400-1950 and Communication and Culture: International Technical Writing. UW-Stout students will select one of the five courses that run for three weeks in the summer.

Limerick, Ireland

map of IrelandLimerick is a city located in the Midwestern section of Ireland. The city lies on the River Shannon with three main rossing points near the center of the city. The population of Limerick is 93,321, which ranks as the third largest city in Ireland. The city dates back to early Viking settlements. The Normans redesigned the city in the 12th century and added much of the most notable architecture such as King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral.

Courses

The technical communications course will transfer back as Stout’s ENGL-312 International Technical Communication where the other four courses could transfer back as general education credits. Upon successful completion, students will receive three credits. Keep in mind that six credits are needed to receive financial aid in the summer. Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, some meals, health insurance and International Student ID Card. Airfare, passport, additional meals and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility

Students must be at least sophomore status, have a GPA of 2.5, and be in good academic standing at the time of participation.

Housing and Meals

Students will live on campus at Dromroe Village. Lunch will be provided, however, additional meals will be purchased directly by the student. More information about accommodations can be found at this website: http://www.ul.ie/campuslife/dromroe.htm

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid U.S. passport for entrance into Ireland. The current passport fee is $100. To ensure summer participation, students must apply for their passport by no later than January. If students already have a US passport, they must make sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
