Program Description

Students will analyze multiculturalism and diversity in the hotel, restaurant and tourism workplace. Throughout this course, students will learn about managing a diverse workforce in a logical and meaningful manner through understanding self perspectives, group identities and workplace strategies. this course will allow students to gain a unique perspective on hospitality diversity management by being submersed into another culture, having the opportunity to attend the 10th annual conference on "Diversity Organisations, Communities and Nations" in Belfast, Ireland and by taking part in field excursions. Presentations will be made by some of Belfast's top business HR directors and general managers. Cultural excursion include the belfast Zoo, a show at the Grand Opera House and the Belfast Castle.

 

Belfast Ireland

Belfast is the capital and largest city in Northern Ireland. Home to nearly 580,000 residents, Belfast is the center for industry, the arts, higher education and business. Frommer's, an American travel guidebook series, listed Belfast as the only destination in the United Kingdom in the 2009 edition of the Top 12 Destinations to Visit in 2009. At present, Belfast is looking to enhance the tourist industry in Northern Ireland by expanding apartments and hotels, adding a riverside entertainment district, a Titanic-themed attraction and investing in a new, modern transport system.

Courses

After returning from Ireland, students will be required to attend follow-up classes on campus July 26 - July 30. Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits in HT-350, Hospitality Diversity Management.

 

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, an international student ID card, housing, local transportation and flight. Passport fees, museum fees, meals and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents. As part of the program costs, each student will receive a monthly travel pass which allows the use of trains, tubes, and buses anywhere in central and south London twenty-four hours a day. Central London is only about twenty minutes away by train from the residence halls in which students will be staying.

Eligibility

This course is open to Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism students who have at least junior status. Participants must also have a GPA of 2.00, and be in good academic standing at time of participation.

 

Housing and Meals

Students will be housed in residence halls at Queen's University or local hotels or hostels. Students will be responsible for purchasing daily meals.

 

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid U.S. passport for entrance into Ireland. The current passport fee is $100. Students should apply for their passport by no later than January to ensure summer participation. If students already have a U.S. passport, be sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the U.S.

 

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
