Program Description

University of Wisconsin-Stout students majoring in technology-related fields have the opportunity to gain international experience related to their fields through tours of manufacturing and distribution facilities abroad. Students will first visit Karlsruhe, Germany, which is in the heart of the high-tech Rhine River valley. Here, students will visit IWKA Packaging, Siemens industrial park, vehicle manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, and tour the Hoepner Brewery. Time will be available to sample German cultural attractions and cuisine. A side trip to the Black Forest and Strasbourg, France will also be included. The second leg of the trip will bring the students to Istanbul, Turkey to see manufacturing and distribution sites in a developing country. Visits will be made to Arslan Manufacturing in an industrial park, Supsan auto parts manufacturing, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and the port of Istanbul. Ample time will be available to explore the unique mix of European and Middle Eastern culture that makes Turkey a country full of rich cuisine and culture.

Karlsruhe, Germany and Istanbul, Turkey

map of TurkeyKarlsruhe, Germany is a mid-sized city and the capital of the former German state of Baden. Students will stay within walking distance of its famed Badisches Landesmuseum at the geographic center of town, where 32 roads emanate in all directions. Karlsruhe has the mildest climate in Germany. Istanbul, Turkey is at the geographical crossroads between Europe and Asia, and was the center of world political affairs for 15 centuries. Students will stay in the heart of the old town, within sight of the Bosphorus Strait, Ottoman Palace, Aya Sophia church, and Blue Mosque. The hotels are within walking distance of the famed Covered Bazaar, with over 4,000 shops of all items imaginable.

Courses

Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits for this program. Students will in enroll in course number INMGT-462/662-0S1. Keep in mind that six credits are required to receive financial aid in the summer.

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, international student ID card, housing, some meals, flight, and local transportation. Passport/visa fees, most meals, and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents. If using financial aid for this experience, make sure to contact your financial aid counselor at the start of the fall semester if additional funding is needed.

Eligibility

Students must be at least junior status and be in good academic standing at the time of participation. Students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Housing and Meals

The group will be staying in small, locally run hotels while in Kuarlsruhe and Istanbul. They are centrally located in the host cities near public transportation and tourist sites. Breakfast will be provided at both hotels.

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid US passport for entrance into Europe. A passport with a tourist visa stamp will be needed for entrance into Turkey. The visa is $20 (15 Euro). The current passport fee is $100. Students should apply for their passport by no later than January to ensure summer participation. If students already have a US passport, they must make sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
