Program Description

This three week program will examine the First World War from a global perspective. The program will be directed by Lieutenant Colonel, Scott Bolstad, who has over 23 years of experience in the US Army. He has lived in Europe for a total of seven years and will bring a unique military and cultural perspective to this course. The first two weeks will begin in the classroom at UW-Stout. A trip to France and Belgium’s infamous World War I battlefields will bring the material to life during the last week of the program. The battlefields to be visited are: Verdun and Somme in France and Ypres and Mons in Belgium. Students will arrive and depart from Brussels, Belgium.

map of FranceStudents will visit the major battlefields of the Western Front in France and Belgium to include Verdun and the Somme region in France as well as the Mons and Ypres battlefields in Belgium. We will make our way to Verdun in the South and end our trip in Ypres. We will make stops along the way to note significant areas of the Western Front. In addition, we will visit locations of historic significance other than World War I locations if there is time available.

Courses

Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits. Students will enroll in course number MSL 304-0S1. To receive financial aid in the summer, keep in mind that six credits are required. This course will examine the First World War that will compare the experiences of each of the major belligerents. The course will consist of lectures, class discussions, student presentations, and tours of the major battlefields of the Western Front. The class will cover the home front, Holocaust, and military campaigns while considering the social, economic, political and technological factors that contributed to the manner in which the belligerents waged war. In addition, a case study of the interrelationship of sea, air and land forces and the complexities of combined operations on a global scale will be discussed.

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, housing, health insurance, airfare, and the International Student ID Card. Meals, passport fees, museum feels and personal expenses are paid directly by the student. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay for these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility

This course is open to students of all majors, be at sophomore status, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0, and be in good academic standing at the time of participation.

Housing and Meals

Accommodations will be at various youth hostels and hotels in France and Belgium. Meals are not included in the cost. Students should forecast $50 per day for food expenses at local Belgian and French restaurants.

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid US passport for entrance into France and Belgium. The current passport fee is $100. Students should apply for their passport by no later than January to ensure summer participation. If students already have a US passport, they must make sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment to receive application materials and instructions at the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
