Program Description

Developed as an extensions of the highly successful “Travels in Typography” class offered by the University of Minnesota’s Design Institute, join instructor and printing historian, Bill Moran of Blinc Publishing for a tour of some of the finest typographic treasures Europe has to offer. Each stop of the trip will provide the opportunity to research, set type and print in historically significant locations. In addition, the group will examine the art, architecture and politics that fostered the growth of printing in Spain, Germany and Italy.  A large portion of this trip will consist of researching and documenting historically significant books and manuscripts and working in regional letterpress studios to create restrikes of these objects. In addition, students will be expected to compile a journal throughout the trip and complete minor assignments as part of their final grade.

 

Location

Madrid, Spain — Located on the Manzanares River, Madrid is the capital and largest city in Spain. As the capital city of Spain, seat of government and residence of the Spanish monarch, Madrid is also the political center of Spain. Madrid is considered the major financial center of the Iberian Peninsula as it hosts the head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies as well as the headquarters of three of the world’s 100 largest companies. As you travel through Madrid, you will notice the modern infrastructure while preserving the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. The Madrid metropolitan area is home to nearly 5.84 million people.

Mainz, Germany — Home of Johannes Gutenberg and the Gutenberg Printing Press, Mainz is the capital of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. With over two thousand years of history, Mainz was previously a roman fort city which commanded the west bank of the Rhine and formed part of the northernmost frontier of the Roman Empire. Mainz is situated on the Rhine River in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region.

Venice and Treviso, Italy — Considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Venice is the capital of the Veneto region located in northern Italy. The city stretches across 118 small Islands in the Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea. Venice had become the European capital of printing by the end of the 15th century making itself one of the first cities in Italy to have a printing pres. The most important printing office was the Aldine Press which printed the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili-considered the most beautiful book of Renaissance-established modern punctuation, page format and italic type and printed the first work of Aristotle in 1499.

 

Course

Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits for this program. Students will enroll in DES-256, Typography (3 credits).

 

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, international student ID card, housing, local transportation, and flight. Passport fees, most meals and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility

Students must be a sophomore in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.5 to participate in this program.

 

Housing and Meals

Students will stay in hotels for the duration of the program. Breakfast will be provided daily and students will be responsible for purchasing two meals a day.

 

Passport/Visa

You must have a valid U.S. passport for entrance into Spain, Germany and Italy. The current passport fee is $100. You should apply for a passport no later than January to ensure summer participation. If you already have a US passport, they must make sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US.

 

Application Procedures

Please contact the Office of International Education (OIE) for a copy of the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
