Program Description

Students at the University of Wisconsin-Stout have the opportunity to study for one semester at Southampton Solent University in England. This exchange is designed for students who want an opportunity to gain international experience in Europe while earning credit toward graduation at UW-Stout. It would enable students to experience first hand the cultural similarities and differences of living, studying and possibly working in another country. The self-confidence, knowledge and skills gained from the experience will be a valuable asset when students graduate and begin their careers.

Southampton, England

map of EnglandServing over 15,000 British and international students, Southampton Solent University offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in over 30 areas including business, leisure management, fashion, computing, construction, engineering and social sciences. The University’s courses are vocationally oriented and targeted toward the world of work. The modern classrooms, residence halls, library and large sports hall with fitness rooms, sauna, swimming pool, sailing and playing fields provide a pleasant living environment and many opportunities for recreation. The University is located in the center of the port city of Southampton, England on the English Channel sea coast about one hour by train from London. A ferry service and airport link the city to France and the continent of Europe just across the Channel, making it an excellent location from which to explore the rest of Europe. With a population of nearly 200,000 residents, including 30,000 university students, Southampton is home to activities ranging from Shakespeare theater, opera, ballet and classical music to cinemas, and discos. After visiting Southampton’s historic medieval wall, monuments, parks, gardens, and museums, students can take short excursions to nearby historical sites such as Stonehenge, Salisbury and Winchester cathedrals, the resort beaches along the coast and the city of London.

Courses

Southampton offers a wide variety of courses in the study areas of art and design, business and finance, computing, engineering, environment, human and social science, law, leisure, sport and tourism, technology, maritime, media, film and journalism.

Classes at Southampton typically meet once per week for lecture and 2-3 times per week for smaller seminars. In the seminars students are usually expected to work with other students to prepare and present reports based on reading, research or assigned projects. Often instructors do not use textbooks but ask students to synthesize material from a number of sources related to the subject. Grades are usually based on the results of one or more seminar projects and a three hour written exam at the end of the course.
