Program Description

Students participating in this program will gain an understanding of a culture closely related to, but distinctly different from their own. In the lectures and specific destinations of this study tour, students will focus upon the aspects of art, architecture and design that are peculiar to the British, that are particularly revealing of British values, or in which the British have been greatly influential. By studying British art, students will also engage in British life and culture through their travels. Students will explore a wide variety of British marvels including St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens, Stonehenge, Cardiff Castle, and several different museums. Upon completion of this course students will be able to identify specific works and styles from different historic periods; recognize the work of particular British artists, architects, designers and craftsmen; understand the British aspect of various art forms; and explain the significant international importance of the British in certain art forms.

England

Great Britain is an interesting and exciting place to study Art History. World-renowned museums, galleries and architectural sites are found throughout the country. Cultural and social events continually take place making this a great place to visit and study.

Courses

Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits in Special Topics in Art History. Students will enroll in course number ARTH-256-0S1, Special Topics in Art History. Students can also use this as a substitution for ARTH-333 Period Furnishings. To receive financial aid in the summer, keep in mind that six credits are required.

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, an international student ID card, housing, local transportation and flight. Passport fees, museum fees, meals and personal expenses are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents. As part of the program costs, each student will receive a monthly travel pass which allows the use of trains, tubes, and buses anywhere in central and south London twenty-four hours a day. Central London is only about twenty minutes away by train from the residence halls in which students will be staying.
