Program Description
The program at the South Central University for Nationalities (SCUN), in the city of Wuhan, is designed to provide students with the opportunity to study about and with ethnic and minority students of China. SCUN has a student population of 16,000 and forty-eight ethnic minority groups are represented on campus. A main objective of the program is to give participants a genuine and real Chinese experience.
Wuhan, China
The SCUN campus is located in Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei Province in central China. The population is 7.1 million and is one of the six largest cities in China. Wuhan is a major transportation hub branching out via railways, roadways, and waterways. Amongst plenty of sunshine, the region has a variety of seasons with hot weather, humid summers, and cold winters. Wuhan is a city with a rich history where at various points in time, the city was the political, military, and cultural center of China.
Courses
The program coordinator of the Ethnic Minority Cultures Program arranges this program. Students take a semester of five pre-arranged courses (15 credits). Four of the five courses are taught in English. For that particular course, a local student is assigned to each participant as their language partner. The courses are: Ethnic Minority Cultures of China, Contemporary China, Chinese History and Culture, Practical Chinese, and Cross Cultural Understanding (not taught in English). The program coordinator will also provide support for participants, teach one of the required courses, and arrange academic trips. The specific coursework for this program can fulfill general education or program requirements. A meeting with the student’s Program Director is recommended regarding the transfer of coursework. Please review the UW-Platteville website below for courses offered: http://www.uwplatt.edu/studyabroad/china/courses/index.html
