Program Description

This short term program will offer those in the applied math and science and other areas the chance to complete their Elementary Statistics course in Beijing, China. Elementary statistics and Math History will be taught and led by UW-Stout’s professor, Dr. Mingshen Wu. The course will be held on the campus of Central University of Nationalities (CUN) and is offered to both UW-Stout and CUN students. Outside of class, students will visit sites that will enhance learning .Students will visit various historical landmarks in Beijing, China, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City (Imperial Palace), the Tower of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and the newly constructed sports complex for the 2008 Olympics.

Basic, conversational Chinese language sessions will be offered by Dr. Wu before the group departs to China. UW-Stout also offers Chinese via the RosettaStone language program. Contact the Office of International Education for more information about this language program.

Beijing, China

Students will be staying in Beijing, China (People's Republic of China) on the campus of Central University of Nationalities. The campus was officially founded in 1952 and has a student population of 8,000. The campus is located near the National Library of China as well as local shops and restaurants. Beijing is located in northern China and is the second largest city (15 million) after Shanghai. The city is recognized as the political, educational, and cultural center of the Republic, while Shanghai and Hong Kong lead in the economic fields.

Course

Upon successful completion, students will receive 3 credits for this course, two for elementary statistics and one for Math History. Students will in enroll in Elementary Statistics STAT-196. To receive financial aid in the summer, keep in mind that six credits are required.

Estimated Costs

Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition and fees, health insurance, international student ID card, housing, most meals, flight, and ground transportation. Passport/visa fees, personal expenses and some meals are paid directly by the students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Need based scholarships are available to eligible Wisconsin residents.

Eligibility

This course is open to all UW-Stout students and/or any college level students. Students must also be at least a sophomore, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0, and be in good academic standing at time of participation. No prior knowledge of the Chinese language is required for participation.

Housing and Meals

Students will be staying in a hotel owned by Central University of Nationalities (CUN). Meals will be provided at campus cafeterias using pre-paid meal cards. Weekend meals will be paid directly by the students.

Passport/Visa

All students must have a valid U.S. passport and a Q1 tourist visa for entrance into China. The current passport fee is $100 and the visa is $50. Students should apply for their passport by no later than January to ensure summer participation. If students already have a US passport, they must make sure to check the dates of validity. It must be valid for six months beyond the return date to the US. The Office of International Education will assist with obtaining the visa.

Application Procedures

Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
