Program Description
University of Wisconsin-Stout students in Engineering have an opportunity to gain international experience studying and traveling in Australia while earning credit toward their degree program. The University of Newcastle has high academic standards, superb recreational facilities, natural surroundings, award-winning buildings and excellent access to the latest technology. They are ranked as one of the world's top 100 universities for engineering technology and computer sciences (Shanghai Jiao Tong University rankings by field 2007). The Engineering program is at the Callaghan Campus. Located on a 140-hectare site of natural bushland, 12 kilometers west of the city of Newcastle, Callaghan campus has a reputation for being one of the most naturally beautiful campuses in Australia. Callaghan is the original campus and the place where the majority (around 16,000) of the students are based. This campus also enjoys fantastic sporting facilities. The Forum sports complex houses a state of the art 50m indoor heated pool, a 18m climbing wall (the second highest in Australia), a fully equipped gymnasium, two martial arts/aerobics studios and two competition indoor courts for sports such as basketball and volleyball.

New Castle, New South Wales
The University of New Castle is located in New Castle, a city located on the coast in New South Wales, Australia. It is a lively port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australia's coastline with wonderful beaches, a low cost of living, a favorable climate and casual lifestyle. It’s also about 2 hours far from Sydney, the capital of New South Wales. New Castle has a population of 350,000 with a thriving business and commercial sector. It is packed with a selection of restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centers and nightclubs. Newcastle is also a popular tourist destination. A few kilometers south of the city is Australia's largest seaboard lake, Lake Macquarie, scene of many national and international sailing events. Less than one hour's drive to the north is the impressive harbor of Port Stephens, a popular centre for big game fishing, sailing, surfing, and sail-boarding. To the west are the internationally famous wineries of the Hunter Valley, many of them more than a century old. To the south is the beauty and beaches of the Central Coast.
Courses
Students, with the approval of their program director, choose 2 or 3 classes within the following disciplines: Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering. In addition, program participants will take a course of their choosing in Australian history or culture (4 credits) as well as the Cross-Cultural Understanding course (1 credit), equally 13-17 credits for the semester.

Estimated Costs
Students will pay a program fee to UW-Stout to cover the cost of tuition, health insurance, service and contingency fees, housing and laptop fees. All other expenses, including personal expenses, visa fees, meals and travel are paid directly by students. Eligible students can use their financial aid to help pay these expenses. Actual costs may necessitate an increase depending on changes in currency exchange rate, tuition increases, airfare and personal spending habits.

Eligibility
This study abroad program is open to students in any program who can use the courses at University of Newcastle to meet degree requirements at Stout. Students must be at least a sophomore and must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher to participate and be in good academic standing. Applicants will also need the approval of their program director and one letter of reference from a faculty member.
Housing and Meals
Students will live in pre-arranged off-campus housing chosen and approved by the On-Site Program Co-ordinator. Housing will be provided in self-contained apartments or houses and will typically be furnished and have two to three bedrooms with a lounge, kitchen, bathroom and laundry access. This accommodation will be within easy reach of both the University and the city as well as having close proximity to the patrolled and beautiful beaches that form part of the city’s attractions.
Students prepare most meals at their accommodation, but there are dining options in the city and on campus.
Passport/Visa
Students make their own travel arrangements to Australia. When making travel arrangements if you are unable to get a direct flight to Lismore you should make arrangements to fly into Ballina. Depending on the starting and ending date of the term, students may have the option of traveling in Australia before as well as after the end of the program. Students will need to have a passport and visa to study in Australia. The Office of International Education can provide more information on travel and immigration requirements.
Application Procedures
Please make an appointment with the Office of International Education (OIE), 400 Bowman Hall, to review and receive the application materials. Completed forms are returned to OIE. A $100 nonrefundable application fee is paid to the Student Business Services Office located in the Administration Building at time of application. Once accepted by UW-Stout, a $200 nonrefundable service fee will be required to hold a place in the program.
After applications are approved by UW-Stout, a $200 service fee must be paid to hold a place on the program. Applications will then be sent to Southern Cross University, which will issue a formal confirmation of enrollment to the student.
