Through the decades, Stout has had several official and unofficial songs. A contest sponsored by the Stoutonia in 1919 produced close to 20 original songs and parodies. Two later songs that retained their popularity for years were "Alma Mater" and "Stout-Hearted Men." "Alma Mater" was written in the 1926-27 academic year by Lillian Hylland and Jane Hamsley who were members of the Glee Club. Mary Ellen Klatt, a junior at the time, wrote "Stout-Hearted Men" in 1936.
