Jenna's Graduate Experience

Program: M.S. in Applied Psychology

Concentrations: Program Evaluation, Industrial/Organizational Psychology

Why did you choose UW-Stout?
I had been in another graduate program and several students that were in that program told me about Stout and how much they liked it. I looked into the graduate programs offered and found that the Applied Psychology degree fit my interests.

What was your favorite part of your first semester of graduate school?
Getting to know my classmates, collaborating on projects and taking Organizational Development with Dr. Kat Lui. She is awesome.

Was graduate school anything like you imagined it would be when you first started?
Since I had already been in a doctoral level grad program before enrolling at UW-Stout, I had a good idea of the level of rigor. I did not realize how much better I would like it compared to my previous institution. UW-Stout had much smaller cohorts and class sizes, which lended itself to much more personal attention for the students.

What was the biggest surprise for you in regards to graduate school?

How quickly it goes by!

How has your program shaped your life and career goals?
It has shown me the many paths down which I can take my career. I have become a lot more politically, environmentally and socially engaged as a result of the projects we completed and organizations we worked with. The program provided me with real-world experience that allowed me to get a job very easily after graduation, even in a poor economy.

What opportunities have been presented to you because of your program?
I worked with several organizations while in the program which gave me valuable experience as a young professional. I also was offered the first position for which I was interviewed after graduation. It also introduced me to the idea of doing consulting and how to go about doing that, which now can add to my potential income.

What is one piece of advice that you wish you had received before starting graduate school?
Get involved in as much as you can because it will bolster your resume, give you great experience and allow you to make connections and friendships that last long after graduation.

How would you describe the UW-Stout Campus?
It is a very beautiful campus. The landscaping effort that is undertaken each spring is incredible. There are many trees on campus in addition to all of the pretty flowers that are planted every year. I really liked all of the old brick buildings too.
