A Gift of Life Insurance – Robert and Margaret Swanson

Robert and Margaret Swanson have been leading forces on the UW-Stout campus since 1942 and 1944 respectively. Bob enrolled in the Stout Institute in 1942 and Penny two years later. Bob interrupted his university education to serve in WWII and graduated in 1949 with a degree in industrial education. He also served as President of Stout Student Association in 1948-49. Penny graduated in 1948 with a degree in foods and nutrition.

Bob served as Chancellor from 1972-1988 and was granted emeritus status by the Regents in 1988. He was Dean of the Graduate College, Assistant Dean and then Dean of the School of Applied Science and Technology, chair of the Wood Technics department and professor of education and industrial education. Bob began his teaching career with the Stout Institute in 1950. Penny was involved with the university with responsibilities related to the Chancellor’s activities and was especially interested in international student activities.

Robert S. and Margaret “Penny” Swanson established an unrestricted $100,000 endowed planned gift of life insurance in 1990 with the Stout University Foundation. Bob established the gift of life insurance because “Stout has been our life and continues to give us a truly wonderful existence. In appreciation, we want to return a gift which will give the Foundation and the university some flexibility in developing special programs, projects and/or faculty as needed.”
