What is the PLUS loan?
The Federal PLUS loan (Parent Loand for Undergraduate Students) is a loan to the parent of a dependant undergraduate student for educational expenses in the academic year. The Federal PLUS Loan is part of FFEL (Federal Family Education Loan) Program, lending institutions participating in the program loan funds to the parent borrower. Before the Financial Aid Office can process your request for a PLUS loan, the student must have a valid Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the University of Wisconsin-Stout for the appropriate award year, and have responded to all requests for supplemental data (such as verification documents). If you have not filed a FAFSA, the application is available online at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Note: Average processing time for the PLUS application is 2 to 3 weeks.
Step Two: If you are a new PLUS borrower, complete the PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN) online.
Note: "New PLUS borrower" means that you have not borrowed a PLUS at UW-Stout for the student listed on the application.
Before you begin:
- Obtain Your Personal Identification Number (PIN), which serves as your electronic signature on the MPN. If you applied for a PIN when your son or daughter completed the FAFSA, this is the same PIN.
- Review and select lender; you will need to supply the lender name and code on your Master Promissory Note (MPN). Many lenders offer repayment incentives. click here to view our lender list.
Complete the PLUS MPN online:
- Complete this Master Promissory Note only if you are borrowing a PLUS
loan for the first time at UW-Stout for this student or if a financial
endorser was required when you applied previously. You will need to sign
a separate PLUS MPN for each dependent student you are borrowing for,
even if they attend the same school and have the same parent borrower.
- Notes: The parent who applied for the loan must be the parent who completes the MPN. A fully completed, error free MPN is required before your loan can be finalized. Contact the Financial Aid Office at 715-232-1363 or at finaid1@uwstout.edu if you have any questions or concerns about your PLUS loan disbursements.
