Research Interests

shica2 shicam-1_3 legal-philosophy_1

My main research interests involve issues at the intersection of law, ethics and politics, in particular, freedom of speech. I have done more than eighty presentations and workshops on free speech, ethics and ethics education, and other topics in political philosophy. You can contact me directly at shiellt@uwstout.edu or look me up at the Wisconsin Humanities Council Speakers Bureau or The UW-Stout Center for Applied Ethics.

My first book Legal Philosophy: Selected Readings, was published by Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich in 1993. It has chapters on legal theory, law and morality, constitutional law, law and liberty, law and justice, punishment and criminal law, and private law (contracts and torts). You can buy a new copy at its current publisher Cengage Learning http://www.cengage.com/ or a new or used copy at Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/

My second book was Campus Hate Speech on Trial published by the University Press of Kansas in 1998. You can buy a copy from the publisher http://www.kansaspress.ku.edu/ or Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/

Campus Hate Speech on Trial, Second Edition, Revised, was published in May 2009. You can order a copy at http://www.kansaspress.ku.edu/ or http://www.amazon.com/

I also have published the Wisconsin's Free Speech Legacy website, which is temporarily disabled as it needs to be re-built in CommonSpot.

You can see my other publications via the link to my c.v. on this webpage

Courses Taught

Since I began substitute teaching as an undergraduate, I have taught many different courses in philosophy.

At UW-Stout, I teach introductory courses that serve program requirements, general education requirements and requirements for the Minor in Philosophy. In Summer 2006 I began teaching online sections every semester.

At prior educational employers, I taught both general education courses and upper level courses for undergraduate philosophy majors.

One of the most fun teaching experiences of my career was my semester (Spring 2000) in Dalkeith, Scotland teaching with the University of Wisconsin-in-Scotland program.
