Janice Mertes teaches Elearning for Educators.
Janice has been implementing blended and virtual elements into both her instruction and professional development offerings since 2001.
Janice served as a National Board certified social studies instructor for 19 years at Sun Prairie High School, and is now the Digital Learning Specialist at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. In her previous district role, Janice also served as the district technology and virtual learning integrator, including managing the district Moodle instance.
Janice has in-serviced teachers in the required 30 online certification course as well as mentoring teachers in best practices of instructional design. She believes strongly in modeling practices and technologies to create dynamic discussion-based constructivist learning environments.
Ms. Mertes graduated summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in history, Latin, political science and secondary education. She earned her first Masters Degree in history as a James Madison Fellow from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee focusing on Constitutional Studies in 1998. In 2009, Ms. Mertes completed a second Masters Degree from Nova Southeastern with a focus on K12 Technology and curriculum integration as a Pearson Liberty Mutual nation fellowship recipient.
She also completed the Online Teaching Certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Stout as well as completed level three training for Moodlerooms. Ms. Mertes has completed additional trainings and action research related to blended learning, instructional design, digital learning objects, virtual teaming and effective facilitation strategies. Ms. Mertes is currently completing her Instructional Technology Leadership degree focusing on effective leadership for the digital age.
Janice was honored to be selected as a Herb Kohl Fellowship recipient in 2006 and Wisconsin’s National Education Association I Can Learn Excellence award in 2007. Janice has attended the Microsoft Innovative Forum twice in 2007 and 2009 presenting materials related to 21st century learning environments and creating technology professional learning communities. Janice currently sits on Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s national teaching team speaking about the role of gaming and civics in producing an engaged citizens. She served as her district’s Morgridge Wisconsin Technology Initiative (WTI) grant coordinator and continues to participate in statewide WTI activities.
She has completed the Smart Exemplar training and is currently working on her Google Education certification. Janice continues to present on a wide array of technology integration projects as well as participating in online technology professional learning communities.
Janice happily resides in the Madison as a proud Badger fan with her husband and daughter. She enjoys working with adult learners to impact classrooms around the nation and looks forward to the constructivist learning opportunities facilitating this course will offer.
