Brief Biography

Kate Maury received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Kansas City Art Institute and a Master of Fine Art from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Currently she resides in St. Paul, Minnesota where she is a studio resident at the Northern Clay Center and teaches full-time as a Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Her work is featured in both juried and invitational shows at regional, national and international venues. In addition Maury’s work is published in contemporary ceramic art books such as Making Marks: Discovering the Ceramic Surface by Robin Hopper, 500 Bowls, Lark Books, The Art of Contemporary American Pottery by Kevin Hluch, and High-Fire Glazes by Lark Books. She has taken part in two residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation and awarded a grant from Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute to serve as Ambassador to Jingdezhen, China in the 1000 Years Celebration of Porcelain Conference and taken part in their residency program. Most recently she completed a residency at the International Ceramics School in Kecskemet, Hungary. In addition she pursues her interests in folk art by traveling extensively throughout India and China documenting local artistic practices in pottery and textiles which are integral to the cottage industries.

Teaching Interests: My teaching interests include low through high fire ceramics that encompass thrown and hand-building techniques. I introduce a wide range of surface treatments through glaze, slip application, incising, screen printing as well as sprig application.

Research Interests: I have researched the folk arts throughout India and took part for three summer residencies in Jingdezhen, China where I produced slip caste pieces as well as repurposed Ming shards for mosaic work. Most recently I was a resident at ICS in Hungary where I produced functional hand- built center pieces with decorative sprig application for use in celebratory settings.

Professional Interests: My research is regularly in national exhibitions and I am actively pursuing publication in international ceramic magazines as well as having an online presence for my work. Next year a video of my process will be available through Ceramic Arts Daily and an article will be published in Pottery Making Illustrated. This month I have an article in Studio Potter Magazine. All of these venues are internationally known within the ceramic art community.
