Dr. Susan Israel is the program advisor for the reading specialist certification program and teaches three courses: RDGED 720 Leading and Directing the Reading Program, RDGED 721 Supporting Literacy Instruction, and RDGED Reading Specialist Field Experience.

Susan E. Israel, Ph.D., is an author and literacy consultant.  She was born in South Bend, Indiana.  She taught elementary school for ten years before getting her doctorate in reading and educational psychology.  Israel was awarded the 1998 teacher-researcher grant from the International Reading Association (IRA).

Susan has served on a number of IRA committees and interest groups, and was President of the History of Literacy Special Interest Group.  Previously, Israel served as assistant professor at the University of Dayton, and in 2005 she was awarded the University’s Panhellenic Council Outstanding Professor Award.  She has also served on the national faculty at the University of Notre Dame Alliance for Catholic Education, where she taught reading and language arts methods.   

Her current research interests include literacy development in reading and writing.  Israel has authored, coauthored, or edited over 20 books and volumes, and is co-editor of the recently published comprehensive volume, Handbook of Research on Reading Comprehension (Israel & Duffy, 2009).
