UW-Stout has always been an innovator in applying technology to education. Digital technology is essential to 21st century life and learning. That’s why we decided to revolutionize learning with a wireless laptop environment - the first public university in Wisconsin to do so.
The laptop will be an indispensable tool in your life. You will use it to take notes, conduct research, write papers and calculate answers anywhere on campus. You will communicate with your instructors, classmates, friends and families by e-mail. With the laptop, you will build your own Web pages, participate in classroom group activities, submit papers electronically, participate in online discussion groups and access class materials on the Web.
The digital learning environment also:
- Promotes more interaction and collaboration. You will work together with fellow students anywhere on campus at anytime of day with the latest information at your fingertips.
- Multiplies opportunities for active learning. You will construct your own knowledge, using digital technologies to find and assemble information in the classroom. Your instructors will be your guides.
- Increases access to university services. You will access a variety of online student services on the laptop. Using Access Stout, a group of online services, you will be able to register for courses, print your schedule and view your account information.
- Improves graduates’ critical technology skills. As a graduate, you will have the skills to find a job in the new economy, where employers will expect you to find and assemble information, using technology.
- Extends credit earning possibilities. When you leave for winter and summer break, as a returning student you can take the laptop with you. In fact, you may even decide to use the laptop to take an online course while you work a summer job or rest up during winter break. By taking online courses, you can catch up, accelerate toward graduation or lighten your course load during the fall and spring semesters.
