| What kind of laptop will UW-Stout provide me? |
| Freshmen in most of UW-Stout’s programs will receive high performance
HP laptop computers loaded with software. Freshmen in Art or Graphic Communications
Management programs will be given fully loaded
Apple laptop computers.
UW-Stout’s e-Scholar laptop program includes ongoing maintenance and technical support. Because technology rapidly changes, the laptop will be upgraded every two years. Some academic programs require sophisticated software and equipment
that laptops cannot support. UW-Stout continues to maintain special labs
that meet the needs of these programs. |
| What do I get with the laptop and when is deployment? |
Students will receive a backpack, power cords, an ethernet cord, and telephone cord. Apple laptops also receive additional video adaptors and the HP laptops have an additional battery. Deployment is at the beginning of the term. Fall Deployment information : |
| Do Distance Education students receive laptops? |
Students enrolled in three or more qualifying UW-Stout credits receive a laptop, and the cost is included in the tuition for attending UW-Stout. Distance Education students are responsible to come to campus to pick up the laptop if they are eligible to receive a laptop. Graduate students and Customized Tuition students are not eligible for the e-Scholar program. If you have questions about your specific type of credit, please contact Joan Wahl, 715-232-2649. Deployment information will be sent to eligible students via UW-Stout email accounts prior to the term. |
| Can I get help to cover this cost? |
| UW-Stout, along with the Stout University Foundation, sponsors a scholarship
program for incoming freshmen, sophomores, freshmen transfers and sophomore
transfers to support the e-Scholar Program. These scholarships
are need-based, requiring a financial aid application and a Foundation
Scholarship Application. Scholarships in the amount of $500 will be awarded
to financially needy freshmen and sophomores admitted in the e-Scholar Program
and meeting the scholarship requirements.
Freshmen and sophomores who wish to apply must complete the Foundation Scholarship Application by the deadline in early February. In addition, freshmen and sophomores must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the priority date. For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office at finaid@uwstout.edu or 715-232-1363. |
| Can I bring my own computer to campus? |
Yes, you can bring your own computer to campus; however, you will use the laptop provided by the university for your academic work. We do recommend that you bring a printer with you to campus. |
| What if I don’t know much about laptops or wireless technology? |
| Don’t worry about it. We will provide training that
will help you learn to use the technologies. By the time you enter the workforce, you will be amazed at how your knowledge
about digital technology has evolved.
During orientation, you will attend a laptop training session. This program covers a variety of issues, including computer care, connectivity, ethical use, security, networking and e-mail. |
| What will I do if the laptop quits working? |
| UW-Stout’s Ask 5000 Help Desk offers full time technical support.
You will be able to report problems in person, over the phone, by e-mail
or on the Web. To reduce downtime, Ask 5000 has implemented a First Responder
team, adding new technicians to their staff.
If a laptop needs repairs, the university will provide you a loaner. The pop out hard drive of your laptop will be put into the loaner, so you can easily get back to work. If the laptop has a hard drive problem, the university will provide a loaner loaded with the standard operating systems. You should always back up your files that are on the hard drive (each
laptop model features a CD burner), so that you can easily load them
onto the loaner. Technology and Information Systems will provide network
storage space where you can keep critical documents. |
| What happens if the laptop is lost or stolen? |
A $400 deterrent fee will be added to your University account for a lost or stolen University laptop. After you submit the required police report to ASK5000 Help Desk, you will receive a replacement laptop. |
| Can I purchase the laptop? |
The university is piloting a Laptop Transfer Program currently. Students must have participated in the e-Scholar Program with a minimum of 32 e-Scholar credits and graduated from UW-Stout to be eligible to participate in the program. The university contacts eligible students during the term that the student has applied for graduation and informs them of the program options. |
