Laptop computers are easy targets for thieves. Laptop computers are small, valuable, can be removed quickly, and are easily hidden. Laptop computers can be worth up to $5000 or more. The laptop computer can be pawned at a pawnshop for half its value.
Here are a few tips to reduce the risk of having the laptop stolen.
- Do not leave the laptop out in the open even for a second.
- Transport the laptop in a nondescript case.
- Write down the serial number and keep it in a safe place.
- Always back up your information on disks and store them in a safe place.
Consider purchasing a Kensington lock. This lock can be purchased at the UW-Stout bookstore located at the Memorial Student Center.
Theft Prevention
There are many locations on campus where you will be using the laptop computer- the library, Student Center, residence hall rooms, classrooms, labs, and outside.
Theft is the most common crime on campus. Most items are stolen from vehicles and unlocked or unattended rooms. Over ninety percent of all thefts from campus buildings last year involved unlocked rooms. A room that is unlocked for even a few minutes is all the invitation a thief needs.
Several thefts have taken place in unlocked rooms while the occupant was inside sleeping. Remember, for your own personal safety as well as security of your property, lock your room door when your go to sleep at night.
Theft is the most difficult crime for UW-Stout Police to prevent, but the easiest crime for you to prevent. Lock your doors whenever you are out of your room. If this has not been your habit in the past, it is one you should adopt.
If the laptop computer is stolen or lost you must file a police report.
File a report with the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction where the laptop was stolen or lost.
For example: If a laptop is stolen or lost in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, contact the Eau Claire Police Department. You must get a copy of the Police Report.
If the agency having jurisdiction will not take a report contact the UW-Stout Police Department at 715-232-2222 as soon as possible. In addition, please report the theft within 48 hours to ASK5000, 715-232-5000.
Students are responsible for contacting Telecommunication and Networking to get a replacement laptop. A $400 deterrent fee will be added to your University account for a lost or stolen University laptop. After you submit the required police report to ASK5000 Help Desk, you will receive a replacement laptop.
