Focused Technology Centers

The Discovery Center is building a number of focused technology centers matching need with expertise. Four such centers include:

Examples of early success include:

  • Equipment for precise analysis of and capacity for complex gene expression
  • Collaboration with Marshfield Clinic to provide UW-Stout researchers with tumor samples for analysis to create tissue engineered models to identify and understand cancer cells
  • Development of new methods for detecting mutational changes in genomes to identify potential new drugs and genetic pathways involved in drug responses and disease using zebrafish models
  • Collaboration with a nascent business for research and development of novel nucleic acid gene expression assays
  • Drug screening for UW-Madison pharmacy school client
  • NSF funding to support a study of Hmong folk remedies as a means for recruiting and retaining students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields
  • Development of a master’s degree in Biomedical Science program jointly with UW-River Falls and Marshfield Clinic to be anchored in the Discovery Center
