University community mourns

We mourn the loss of three fine young people – April Englund, Amanda Rief, and Scott Hams. Our thoughts and prayers reach out to the family and loved ones of each of them--as we all in our own way struggle to make sense of this tragedy.

A void exists in the lives of many and in the UW-Stout community. They were part of the fabric of this university; they interacted with and touched the lives of so many, and now they are gone. Perhaps we can best sustain this by celebrating those lives, remembering them as they were and remembering what they brought to their family and friends, and to us.

They had dreams and aspirations, and perhaps at this time, the UW-Stout community might rededicate itself to maintain a healthy, strong, vibrant community where all are respected and where all have a supporting, caring environment; and where all can reach their greatest potential.

I remember the first time I met April, I thought what a pretty girl, so full of enthusiasm! My heart goes out to her family, I can not even fathom what they and the other parents are going through. I still can't believe it myself. Healing takes time, and no one whose lives were touched by these 3 young people will ever be the same. You are all in my prayers.
God Bless you all

Even though I never really knew them all that well I had met both girls a time or two and they were very close to some of my closest friends. I am helping to comfort those friends in this time, knowing exactly what it is like to lose a friend and loved one and only hope this tragedy never happens to anyone. My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents who have lost their child, siblings who have lost their brother or sister and anyone else affected by this tragic event. Hard time lay ahead in the next few days but we will make it through and remember the great times we had with one another and all three will live on in our memories as they watch over us from the heavens above.

I grew up with Scott in Hayward and attended UW-Stout with him as well. Scott had the biggest heart of anyone. He was always so laid back, funny and boy did he love his pranks. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered. My heart goes out to his family during this tragic time.... I did not know either of the girls - but my heart goes out to their friends and families as well.
God Bless!

I didn’t personally know any of these students but I do know many people who did. This is a tragic loss for our campus and the heaviness of it can be felt throughout. Even those of us who didn’t know April, Mandy, and Scott wish we had gotten the chance and mourn their sudden loss. I know that by supporting each other we can make it through these tough times. My prayers go out to the family, friends, and the entire UW-Stout campus. Stay strong and remember that every person you pass on your way to class, or in class has a story…try to get to know it because life’s too short.

I worked with Scott for a while. He was a hard-worker, but knew how to have fun, too. He had a joke to tell when someone was having a bad day, and it would just make the day seem right again. He had an infectious smile, that will always be remembered.

You all have moved on to a better place, and always have a place in the heart of the UW-Stout community. God bless.

I met Scott while sitting by eachother in class last year. After getting to know him through class work, I would often see him out on the weekends with friends. He was always so friendly and kind to everyone. He will be remembered fondly by so many. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and friends of all three victims of this tragic event. God Bless.

I didn't know the three at all, but I had April in a few of my gen ed classes. Its amazing what you remember. I also realized how small our campus is when something like this happens because these lives touched everyone in some way. If not by personally knowing them, but knowing their name and knowing that they exist. RIP April,Amanda and Scott-you will always be remembered in our hearts.

I wasn't good friends with Mandy, but I had the opportunity to meet her on a few occasions. Last semister, I was a director for SSA. When Mandy came in, I remember looking forward to having her with our group. The people I knew that were good friends with Mandy, had a deep affection for her; they really loved the moments they had with her. Mandy was a beautiful soul, and her light will be missed by everyone. My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone that was affected by her death, and those of her friends.

How I say goodbye 4/7/08

Although the time you had was short
It meant so much to all of us
Getting to know you
Was worth every moment

Now I shed a tear
But that’s the price of pain
The price of knowing
The person who is gone today

All I can do to ease the pain
Is place this flower on your grave
As I pray to the Lord
Knowing He has reserved a place for you

For this is why angels sing
To comfort our parting hearts
They hold us in their wing
And fill us with hope

I will always remember you
As the person you were
And also as the person
You never got the chance to be

This is my way, this is my chance
This is how I say goodbye
Goodbye…….for now
Rest in Peace, I will always remember you

Sunny days seem to hurt the most
Wear the pain like a heavy coat
I feel you everywhere I go
I see your smile, I see your face
I hear you laughing in the rain
Still can't believe you're gone

It ain't fair you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
The death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the hell that I've been through
Just knowing no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder who you'd be today

I attended UW-Stout '96-'01, my heart goes out to those lost in the house fire. I wore my UW-Stout sweatshirt to work the Monday after the fire in memory of them.

My God help their families and friends find strength during this difficult time.

As an alumnus of UW-Stout, it was hard to hear the news over the weekend. Although we all come from different backgrounds and cities, we will always have something in common and that is our love and caring for our university and others who have attended the Stout. Like others, I have created a “Stout” Day on Wednesday to remember those who our community has lost and I will encourage many others to wear their Stout gear. God Bless and may the Stout community come together and offer the needed support and guidance.

I did not know these three students, but still my heart is heavy and I find myself crying from time to time. Such young and promising lives cut short, it is hard to understand why, but God in his infinate wisdom. God bless all the families, friends and acquaintences of these three young adults, you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

What a tragedy--a parent's worst fears realized. Let us all learn something about the sanctity of life.

I did not personally know any of the students who lost their lives so tragically, however my son did. I cannot imagine the pain of this loss for the families and their friends. You are all in my thoughts in my prayers.

I did not know these students nor have I ever attended your college. But I do wish the best for your campus and their families in this tough time. I'll admit I just saw the video with WBC and the students unit over so closed minded people. As the website said you "owned them" but you will look back and see it as something that doesn't happen that often.

I was searching Google for "we mourn them, so many dreams lost". I'm not sure why. I stumbled upon this page, and was shocked. There is this feeling inside me of three young, bright individuals who were completely wronged because their university decided it was totally fine to BUILD FLAMMABLE STRUCTURES in which to house students. Never do that again.
