University of Wisconsin - Stout

The University of Wisconsin-Stout was awarded a two year $200,000 Grant to Reduce Violent Crimes Against Women on Campus from the Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women in October, 2004.  In October, 2006 The University of Wisconsin-Stout was awarded continuation funding of this grant. The primary purpose of the project is to institutionalize a campus-wide response to violence against women that prioritizes the needs and safety of student victims, and which creates positive social change within the campus community.

There are three primary areas that project staff will focus on:

  1. Service: The Campus Violence Prevention Project (CVPP) Coordinator will be the point of contact on campus. Students can obtain victim advocacy and specialized assistance and learn about other available services that may meet their needs. One goal of the CVPP is to strengthen coordination between campus and community service providers. This includes improving service coordination and response to students reporting to be victims of sexual assault, stalking and dating and domestic violence. Each case will also be followed by the CVPP coordinator to assure that each victim's needs are met.
  2. Assessment: Develop and administer an anonymous web-based online Campus Violence Prevention survey to obtain baseline information—one-half of the student population will be randomly surveyed in Spring 2005. The survey results will help guide the CVPP staff in developing and delivering CVPP services and outreach to the student population—on the following:
    1. Campus incidence rates of sexual assault, dating and domestic violence, and stalking;
    2. Students' familiarity with existing campus and community victim services and resources;
    3. Students' perceptions of campus/other barriers to victim reporting; and
    4. Students' perceptions of incidence and acceptability of violence against women.
  3. Education: Develop a Violence Against Women education curriculum to be delivered in coordination with First-Year Student Orientation staff.
    • Highlight men's responsibilities to prevent violence against women.
    • The CVPP Coordinator is available to provide presentations to student organizations and classrooms on the following topics: sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking.

Services for victims of sexual assault, stalking, dating and domestic violence are available at the Campus Violence Prevention Project (CVPP). All services are confidential.
