University of Wisconsin-Stout and Xcel Energy Welcomes You
UW-Stout's College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is proud to sponsor the 2008 Stout FLL Regional Tournament. This is the only FLL tournament in the northwest Wisconsin region and was new to the Wisconsin FLL venue in 2005! The tournament will occur on Sunday, November 16, 2008 in the UW-Stout Memorial Student Center. FLL has grown in Wisconsin. In 2007 there are 141 teams registered for the season. We are anticipating 28 teams at our tournament this year.
We proudly recognize Xcel Energy as our Stout FLL Regional Sponsor for the 2nd Year! Thank you Xcel Energy!
FIRST--“For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”--is an international organization whose goal is to inspire interest in science and engineering among young people. In 2005, more than 60,000 youth (from over 7500 teams) from the United States and around the world, including countries such as Singapore, South Africa, and Mexico, participated. Over 8600 teams registered for FLL internationally in 2006. In FIRST Jr. Robotics, students from 9 to 14 years-of-age form teams to design, build, and program robots using LEGO® Mindstorms™ RCX or NXT technology. Working with team members, mentors, and coaches, students apply research skills, engineering know-how, computer programming skills, and presentation techniques as they compete to best solve the annual challenge missions and research tasks.
The upcoming 2008 LEGO League Challenge is "Cimate Connections: Building A Global Game Plan." To meet the 2008 Challenge, students must use creative thinking and robotics technology as they embark on an exploration of the earth's climate, discrovering on their way the links between science, people, resources, and communities. The official missions and research project were revealed September 3, and details on the challenge can be viewed at the FLL website: http://firstlegoleague.org/community/fll/overview.aspx. FLL teams can begin registering May 15 for the year of a tournament.
In Wisconsin, approximately 130 teams competed in 2007 in one of five regional competitions. The state competition was held December 8, 2007 and the top 48 teams from across the state participated in an exciting and fun filled day.
