This position requires a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Education, Materials Chemistry or related field with sufficient background and interest to teach a variety of chemistry courses. A willingness to teach and develop applied chemistry courses is critically important, as is a willingness to incorporate computers as part of the chemical education process.
Position responsibilities include teaching, research, professional and university service and student advising. A typical teaching assignment for a semester would include responsibility for two lecture courses and two or three lab sections. Total in-class contact would average 16 to 18 hours per week. The range of current courses that could be assigned include the following:
- Introductory Chemistry Courses
- Organic Chemistry
- Physical Chemistry
- Chemistry of Materials
- Analytical Chemistry
- Environmental Chemistry
- Polymer Chemistry
Position Responsibilities:
- Teach effectively assigned sections of chemistry courses (lecture and/or lab)
Teaching implies preparing course syllabi including course outline, developing new course material needed, writing and grading examinations and problem sets (or using other appropriate performance evaluation methods), selecting lab experiments and evaluating lab performance, delivering lectures (or using other appropriate methods for presenting course material), supervising lab activities with emphasis on maintenance of a safe and healthy lab environment, continuously evaluating student progress, maintaining regularly scheduled office hours for student assistance outside of class hours, and finally assigning evaluative grades to each student at the end of each course.
- Be prepared to develop other chemistry applications courses as assigned.
- Develop a research program involving undergraduate and/or graduate students that includes active searching for extramural support. The research should be in an applied area related to or complementing existing departmental research directions.
- Participate actively in professional and university service.
- Participate in student program advisement.
- Assume responsibility for one or more departmental instruments (as assigned). Responsibility includes monitoring instrument maintenance, optimizing instrument performance, training users, and acting as the departmental resource person for that instrument.

Faculty are expected to conduct appropriate research and scholarship in their field in addition to teaching, advising and service responsibilities. Instruction is student centered and requires the use of instructional technologies in teaching and may require the delivery of course work via alternative delivery methods, times and locations.
