Chancellor Sorensen with President Bush at the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award ceremony.

I am very pleased to welcome you to the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

This is a very unique institution, one with a long tradition of placing graduates in very rewarding and worthwhile careers. Well over 550 companies and organizations visit campus annually to recruit our graduates, and there is a reason why. We provide broad based yet very specialized academic programs that relate to societal and workforce needs of this country. Our students and our graduates possess a strong work ethic, are highly motivated, and are ready to assume professional responsibilities the very first day on the job.

In November 2001, UW-Stout achieved what no other university in the country has accomplished, winning the coveted and prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. This sets us apart from other schools for recognizing the need to strive for excellence, to measure our progress against national benchmarks, and to maintain a sharp focus on serving our students. UW-Stout is the first public university in Wisconsin to become a digital campus. Beginning in the fall of 2002, all new freshmen will be provided a laptop computer through the university lease program. With this powerful tool, our e-Scholar program will revolutionize the way we teach and the way students learn.

We are a middle size campus of 8,000 students, with dedicated faculty and staff. Our goal is simple: we will become the most modern, advanced university in the nation. Our accomplishments and our vision demonstrate why we say that we are the School of Choice for the 21st Century.

I invite you to visit our web pages to get a sense of who we are; and, when you do, I am sure you will want to plan to visit our campus.
