Ichthyology

4 Credits

Ichthyology is the study of fishes in the very broadest sense and deals with many aspects of their biology. This course will emphasize the taxonomy, classification, morphology, distribution, general ecology and evolution of fishes. Wisconsin is home to over 150 species of native freshwater fishes as well as an increasing number of foreign invaders (e.g., round gobies and bighead carp); thus, much attention will be placed on the diversity at hand. This unique four-week summer course will occur from May 20-June 14. Visits will be made to a local fish hatchery where participants will discover how the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages fish populations.
