Job Description for English Department Faculty
Category I: Teaching
Members of the English Department are expected to:
- Teach their assigned classes and meet contractual obligations.
- Adhere to the time (day and hour) and the prescribed length of classes.
- Assign and respond to student work in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Through scheduled classes, office hours, consultation, and advising, full-time faculty shall be available to students at least three days per week for an average total of twenty hours, including one office hour for each three-credit class that they teach.
- Experiment with innovative classroom strategies where appropriate
- Participate in curriculum development where appropriate
- Use technology in teaching where appropriate
- Attain teaching excellence
Category II: Professional and Public Service
Members of the English Department are expected to:
- Attend department meetings.
- Assist in essential department functions (such as assessment, student placement, advising students, developing library collections, or work on department committees).
- Perform service to the university and profession or community in a professional capacity (such as serving on university committees, boards of directors for professional or community organizations, conference program committees, or organizing readings open to the community).
Category III: Research and Scholarly Activity
Members of the English Department are expected to:
- Keep current with developments in their teaching specialties.
- Continue education relevant to their work as teachers,such as by attending conferences and workshops and by individual reading plans.
- Be active in at least two of the following three areas: publication of scholarly or creative work, presentation of scholarly or creative work to professional or general audiences, and obtaining grants or fellowships.
The job performance of members of the English Department faculty shall be rated:
- below if they do not satisfactorily fulfill the expectations of each category;
- within if they satisfactorily fulfill the expectations of each category.
- above if they satisfactorily fulfill expectations of each category and excel in at least one category.
The job performance of first year probationary faculty should be evaluated primarily by their performance within Category I: Teaching.
Job Description for English Department Academic Staff

Category I
- English Department academic staff shall teach their assigned classes and meet contractual obligations (F7.2 of UW-Stout Handbook).
- Academic staff shall adhere to the time (day and hour) and the prescribed length of classes.
- Academic staff shall assign and respond to student work in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Academic staff in the English Department shall hold at least one office hour per week for each 3 credit class that they teach. Through scheduled classes and office hours academic staff shall be available to students at least three days per week.
Category II
- English Department
academic staff are expected
to:
- attend department meetings;
- assist in such department functions as advising students and assisting in student placement;
- work actively on one or more department committees.
- English Department
academic staff are urged
to:
- participate in study groups or workshops;
- serve, if called upon, on department ad hoc committees;
- perform professional and public service and make contributions to the institution as defined by university policy (F8.1.1 of UW-Stout Handbook).
Although they will not be evaluated on the basis of the following activities, for reasons of professional development English Department academic staff are encouraged to:
- publish scholarly books and articles, fiction, or poetry;
- continue education relevant to their work as teachers;
- obtain grants in their field;
- attend conferences and workshops related to their professional field;
- present poetry readings, general lectures, and papers and presentations at professional meetings; and to participate in research and scholarly activities as defined by university policy (F8.1.1 of UW-Stout Handbook).
Full-time English Department academic staff shall be rated
- below their job description if they do not fulfill Categories I and IIA.
- within their job description if they fulfill at least Categories I and IIA.
- above their job description if they fulfill Category I in a superior manner and IIA satisfactorily, or, fulfill categories I, IIA, and IIB.
Part-time academic staff will be evaluated exclusively on the basis of teaching.
Academic staff who are on leave will receive the same rating as the one received the previous year.
