Teaching PhilosophyAs an instructor I cover the introductory survey to art history, and specialize in the history of design in the upper level classes Evolution of Design and Period Furnishings.
My doctoral studies and some of my research emphasized the decorative arts and material culture of the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries. Within this field I have focused
on some fairly unusual topics, including the figureheads and other ornamental features of baroque-era warships and the significance of antique dollsŐ houses. However, I came to
the history of the decorative arts and design from mainstream art history, and still retain an interest in topics in that field as well. For instance, my current research involves
portraits in which the subject appears dressed as a historical, literary, or symbolic character, rather than simply as their ordinary self. |
