How to Calculate your “GPA in Major”

GPA in major is the GPA of all your major courses.  This is not included in your degree audit (DARS report).  You will have to calculate it yourself.  To identify all the courses in your major just subtract all of your General Education courses and what you have left are the courses in your major.

Here is the formula for calculating the GPA in your major:

GPA in major = total grade points divided by total credits

Do the following to calculate the GPA in your major:

  1. Add up the course credits from all of the courses in your major.  This will be your total credits.
  2. Use Table B to determine your grade points per credit. This will be the numerical version of the letter grade you received in the course
  3. Multiply the course credits by the grade points per credit you received for each individual class. This will give you the grade point that you received in each course.
  4. Add up your grade points from all your courses.
  5. Divide your total grade points by your total credits.
  6. In this example, the GPA in major= 3.357 (94 total grade points divided by 28 total credits)
