Sellberg, Patzner take top individual awards

MENOMONIE (May 8, 2008) - Pole vaulter Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) and hurdler Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) were honored with the top individual awards of the UW-Stout women's track and field team.

Sellberg stepped up this year and became a dominant pole vaulter in the region. Sellberg won the pole vault event at both the WIAC indoor and outdoor championship meets. Sellberg also broke the school record in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault.

Patzner was the Blue Devils' top hurdler throughout her four-year career, and this year scored points at both the WIAC indoor and outdoor meets, finishing fourth in the indoor 55-hurdles and eighth at the outdoor 400-hurdles.

Patzner received the senior class award and Sellberg the junior class award. Anne Guthrie (Fr, LaCrescent, Minn) was the freshman class recipient and Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) the sophomore class recipient.

Abbey Ring (Sr, Manitowoc) was given the coaches award, an award that recognizes an individual that is a key component to the success, the moral, the work ethic and the all-around attitude of the team.

The 2008 team captains of Sellberg, Kelly Schachtner (So, Deer Park), Jackie Bruchez (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) and Charity Cook (So, Lena) were recognized. All four return as captains for 2009.

Mayer, Peter win WIAC championships

EAU CLAIRE (May 3, 2008) - Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) won a WIAC high jump championship for the second time this school year and Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) successfully defended her triple jump title.

Mayer, who won the indoor high jump title earlier this year, won the outdoor championship title with a mark of 5-feet, 3.25-inches at the WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UW-Eau Claire Saturday.

Mayer took second in the discus with an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark of 148-4 and was seventh in the shot put (41-2.25).

Peter, the 2007 WIAC outdoor triple jump champion, defended her title with a jump just inches short of the NCAA automatic qualifying mark. Peter jumped a career-best 39-0.25 on her final jump of the day.

Anne Guthrie (Fr, La Crescent, Minn) was seventh in the heptathlon (3731 pts) and Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) was eighth in the 400-hurdles (1:08.31).

As a team, Stout finished sixth.

Pam Sellberg wins WIAC pole vault title

EAU CLAIRE (May 2, 2008) - Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) won her second WIAC pole vault title in less than three months when she won the crown at the 2008 WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UW-Eau Claire.

Sellberg, who won the indoor title earlier this year, leapt 12-feet, 0.50-inches, edging out UW-La Crosse's Alicia Ellingstad on misses.

Abbey Ring (Sr, Manitowoc) placed seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase (11-minutes, 50.08-seconds). Christa Leesman (Jr, Mesa, Ariz) was seventh in the javelin throw (100-03).

As a team, UW-Stout was in fifth place after the first day.

Patzner takes two seconds, three take firsts

OSHKOSH (April 26, 2008) - Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) took two second place finishes in the hurdle events and Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer), Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) and Pam Sellberg (Sr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) each captured a first place finish at the UW-Oshkosh Titan Invitational on a cold, breezy spring Saturday.

Patzner improved to second in 100-hurdles from the preliminary race and cut off a substantial amount of time from the first race to the finals, finishing in a time of 15.88 seconds. In the 400-hurdles, Patzner placed second in a time of 71.14 seconds.

Mayer won the discus throw (137-9), Peter the triple jump (37-5) and Sellberg the pole vault (12-0).

As a team, Stout finished fourth. Stout will be at the WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 2-3 at UW-Eau Claire.

Three take first place finishes at La Crosse

LA CROSSE (April 18, 2008) - Angie Raasch (Fr, Zumbrotta , Minn), Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) and Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) each recorded a first place finish at the Phil Esten Challenge Friday at UW-La Crosse.

Raasch won the 10,000 meter run by more than a minute, finishing in an NCAA Division III provisional qualiftying time of 37-minutes, 33.53-seconds. Peter took the triple jump in a leap of 37-feet, 0.25-inches and Mayer won the discus throw with a distance of 137-4. Peter and Mayer each reached a provisional mark. Christa Leesman (Jr, Mesa, Ariz) finished third in the javelin throw (102-7). As a team, Stout finished fourth.

Anne Guthrie (Fr, La Crescent, Minn) was third in the heptathlon (3510). Assistant coach Jen Schmidgall ran unattached and finished fifth. Lauren Terry, the daughter of UW-Stout director of physical education Steve Terry, finished fourth.

The Blue Devils will be at the Kip Janvrin Invitational in Indianola, Iowa, Friday, April 25.

Six garner first place finishes at Falcon Invite

RIVER FALLS (April 5, 2008) - UW-Stout took six first place finishes and Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) hit an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark in the discus at the UW-River Falls Falcon Invite Saturday.

Mayer placed third in tossing the discus 144-feet to hit the NCAA mark.

Stout got first place finishes from Terri Race (Fr, Clear Lake, Minn) in the 400-meter dash (61.50); Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) in the 400-hurdles (68.92); Rachel Richardson (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) in the 3000-steeplechase (12:21.80); Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) in the triple jump (36-10.75); Anne Guthrie (Fr, La Crescent, Minn) in the high jump (4-11); and Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) in the pole vault (11-5.75). Sellberg's mark was an NCAA provisional, but she has higher marks on the season.

Staci Paul (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) was second in the pole vault (10-0) as was Kayla Verdegan (So, Tony) in the 5000-meter (20:37.93). No team scores were kept. Stout will be at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational, Saturday, April 12.

Pam Sellberg earns WIAC honors

Pam SellbergMENOMONIE (April 1, 2008) - UW-Stout's Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) was named the WIAC field athlete of the week after breaking the school pole vault record and setting a high provisional mark.

In the first outdoor meet of the season at the Washington University in St. Louis, Mo, Friday, Sellberg broke the school record in the pole vault and also came just under the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying mark to score a high provisional mark. Sellberg cleared a height of 12-feet, 5.50-inches and broke the school record of 11-9 set by Chelsea Becker in 2005.

Sellberg edged out Morgen Leonard-Fleckman of Washington University by nearly six inches to finish first. Leonard-Fleckman was the 2008 Division III indoor pole vault champion

Earlier this season, Sellberg qualified to the indoor national meet and broke the indoor pole vault record.

Abbey Ring wins steeplechase at Wash U

ST. LOUIS, Mo (March 29, 2008) - UW-Stout's Abbey Ring (Sr, Manitowoc) opened the 2008 outdoor season by winning the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Washington University Invitational Saturday.

Ring paced the field with a time of 11-minutes, 58.45-seconds.

Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) won the pole vault in a school record 12-feet, 5.50-inches.

Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) was third in the hammer throw (132-7), as was Anne Guthrie (Fr, La Crescent, Minn) in the high jump (4-9.75), Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) in the 400-hurdles (1:08.16) and Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) in the long jump (17-0.50).

As a team, Stout finished fourth of 16 teams. The Blue Devils will be at the UW-River Falls Invitational Saturday, April 5.

ST. LOUIS, Mo (March 28, 2008) - UW-Stout's Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) wasted no time in pretty much assuring herself a spot at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

ADA, Ohio (March 15, 2008) - UW-Stout's Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) placed fifth in the triple jump at the 2008 NCAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Ohio Northern University.

Peter was seeded eighth coming into the meet, and used a mark of 37-feet, 4-inches for the fifth place finish. Shannon O'Keefe of SUNY-Brockport won the event with a mark of 38-4.75.

Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) placed 11th in the pole vault with a mark of 11-feet, 0.25-inches. Morgan Leonard-Fleckman of Washington University won the event (12-8).

ADA, Ohio (March 14, 2008) - UW-Stout's Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) placed 12th in the high jump at the 2008 NCAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday at Ohio Northern University.

Mayer finished with a mark of 5-feet, 3.25-inches. Crystal Blamy of Keene State won the event (5-7.75).

On Saturday, Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) will compete in the triple jump and Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) will compete in the pole vault.

MENOMONIE (March 8, 2008) - Three members of the UW-Stout women's track and field team will compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 14-15, at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.

Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) will compete in the high jump, Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) in the triple jump and Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) in the pole vault.

Mayer is seeded sixth in the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 5.75-inches. Mayer is scheduled to compete Friday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Peter is seeded seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 38-0.25 and is scheduled to compete Saturday, March 15 at 12:30 p.m.

Sellberg is seeded third in the pole vault with a school record mark of 12-6 and is scheduled to compete Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m.

Mayer wins high jump at Pointers' last chance

STEVENS POINT (March 8, 2008) - Four Blue Devils competed at Stevens Point's last chance qualifier, Saturday, and placed eighth out of 13 as a team.

Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) won the high jump competition, clearing a bar set at 5-5.25. Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) cleared 11-3.75 in the pole vault, earning her second place. Katie Wold (So, Mendota Heights, Minn.) finished the mile run in 6:04.37, placing fourth. Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) was sixth in the 55-hurdles with a time of 8.95.

The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be March 14-15 at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.

Peter second at Whitewater last chance

WHITEWATER (March 7, 2008) - UW-Stout's Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) finished second in the triple jump at the Karl Schlender Last Chance meet at UW-Whitewater Friday.

Peter registered a mark of 36-feet, 5.50-inches. Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) was sixth in the 55-hurdles (9.05).

Stout will be at the Pointer Last Chance meet Saturday, March 8. The NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships will be March 14-15 at Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio.

Patzner places fourth in 55-hurdles at conference

SUPERIOR (March 1, 2008) - UW-Stout's Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles to lead the Blue Devils at the WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at UW-Superior.

Patzner improved on both her time and finish in the event from the preliminaries the day before. Patzner clocked a time of 8.70 seconds in the final. She had qualfied to the finals with a sixth place finish of 8.81 seconds.

Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) finished fourth in the triple jump (36-feet, 2.75-inches). Anne Guthrie (Fr, La Crescent, Minn) finished in a three-way tie for eighth in the high jump (4-9.75). Guthrie also scored a team point by placing eighth in the pentathlon (2626 pts).

As a team, Stout placed eighth.

Mayer, Sellberg leap to conference titles

SUPERIOR (February 29, 2008) - UW-Stout's Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) and Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) each won WIAC individual championships in convincing fashion at the 2008 WIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at UW-Superior.

Sellberg set a new school record and a new Lydia Thering Fieldhouse record with a leap of 12-feet, 6-inches, outdistancing second place finisher Jamie Scott of UW-La Crosse by nearly 10 inches (11-8.50). Sellberg had set the Stout school record last week at 11-10.50. Sellberg was only two inches short of the WIAC record. The jump was an NCAA Division III automatic qualfying mark. The jump punched Sellberg's ticket to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Ohio Northern, March 14-15.

Mayer nearly matched Sellberg's performance, winning the high jump with a mark of 5-feet, 5.75-inches, also setting a new fieldhouse record. Mayer had a four inch margin over second place Becky Thomas of UW-Oshkosh. Mayer's mark was a high NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark.

Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) placed eighth in the long jump (16-10) with her best jump of the season. Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) advanced to the finals of the 55-meter hurdles (8.81 seconds) with a six place finish in the preliminaries.

After one day, Stout was fifth with 23.33 points. The meet will conclude Saturday, March 1.

Pam Sellberg vaults to WIAC honors

MENOMONIE (February 26, 2008) - Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn/Park Center) set a school record in the pole vault and was named the WIAC Field Athlete of the Week.

Sellberg set a school record in the pole vault and reached the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying standard at the Pointer Invitational on Feb. 23.  She won the event with a height of 11-10 1/2, breaking the previous school mark of 11-7 by Chelsea Becker in 2005.

STEVENS POINT (February 23, 2008) - Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) set a school record in the pole vault and also reached an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark at the Pointer Invite Saturday.

Sellberg vaulted 11-feet, 10.50-inches, breaking Chelsea Becker's mark of 11-7 from 2005.

Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) was runner-up in the high jump (5-3) and Abbey Ring (Sr, Manitowoc) was third in the 3000-meter run (10:59.25). Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) was third in the long jump (16-9.25).

Peter earns first, Sellberg, Patzner earn seconds

DULUTH, Minn (February 16, 2008) - Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) took first place in the triple jump, Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) took second in the pole vault, and Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) took home a silver in the 55 hurdles.

Peter's mark of 38-00.25 in the triple jump earned her a gold medal. Sellberg earned her silver when she cleared a bar set at 10-10.75. Patzner's time of 8.71 in the 55-meter hurdles earned her her second place finish.

Emily Stenzel (Fr, North Mankato, Minn)l grabbed a bronze in the 600 with a time of 1:42.23. Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) placed fifth in the shot put with a distance of 38-10.25. Mayer also did well in the weight throw where she recorded a throw of 46-04.75 to earn her sixth place.

Up next for Stout is the Snowshoe Open, hosted by University of Minnestota on Friday, Feb. 22.

Blue Devils second at Border Battle

MENOMONIE (February 9, 2008) - Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) won the triple jump as UW-Stout finished second at the Wisconsin/Minnesota Border Battle Saturday at the Sports and Fitness Center.

Peter finished with a season-best mark of 36-feet, 9-inches.

Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) was second in the high jump (5-1), and was third in the shot put (38-9) and the weight throw (44-10.25). Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) had a runner-up finish in the pole vault (10-10.25), Jackie Bruchez (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) was third in the long jump (15-9).

Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) was second in the 55-hurdles (8.78 seconds). Stout got third place finishes from Abbey Ring (Sr, Manitowoc) in the 3000-meter (11:16.69), Kayla Verdegan (Fr, Tony) in the 5000-meter (19:58.66), Emily Stenzel (Fr, North Mankato, Minn) in the 600-meter (1:42.23) and Terri Race (Fr, Clear Lake, Minn) in the 400-meter (1:01.83).

Stout will be at the Lake Superior Challenge hosted by St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., Saturday, Feb. 16.

Three pick up top six finishes at Bowlus Open

MENOMONIE (February 2, 2008) - Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer), Jackie Bruchez (So, Apple Valley, Minn) and Jasmine Patzner (Jr, Taylor) each had two top-six finishes and Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) won the triple jump for UW-Stout as the Blue Devils hosted the Warren Bowlus Open, Saturday.

Mayer was second in the high jump (5-feet, 1-inch) and fifth in the shot put (38-7). Bruchez finished third in the long jump (16-0.50) and fourth in the triple jump (33-2.50). Patzner was fourth in the 55-hurdles (8.79 seconds) and sixth in the 200-meter (27.69).

Peter took the triple jump with a mark of 35-7.25.

Stout will host the Border Battle, Saturday, Feb. 9 at noon.

MENOMONIE (January 26, 2008) - Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) placed first in the triple jump at the UW-Stout Open Saturday.

Peter logged a leap of 36-feet, 2-inches to win the event.

Pam Sellberg (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) was second in the pole vault (10-10). Abbey Ring (Sr, Manitowoc) was second in the 5000-meter run (19:18.42) and Steph Libby (Fr, Duluth, Minn) was fourth (20:37.42) and Katie Schneiderman (Fr, Magnolia, Minn) was fifth (20:46.48). Emily Stenzel (Fr, North Mankato, Minn) was fourth in the 800-meter run (2:25.13).

Stout will host the Warren Bowlus Invitational Saturday, Feb. 2 at noon.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn (January 12, 2008) - Ashlea Peter (So, Wausau) placed third in the triple jump and Sam Mayer (So, Bloomer) finished fifth in the weight throw as the UW-Stout women's track and field team opened the season at the Northwest Open at the University of Minnesota Saturday.

Peter jumped a distance of 35-feet, 2-inches to place third in the triple jump and Mayer throw the weight 43-3 to place fifth. She was also sixth in the shot put (36-2). Jasmine Patzner (Sr, Taylor) was fourth in the 400 meter run (64.76).

Sam Mayer finishes eighth at 2007 Junior Nationals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind (June 22, 2007) - Sam Mayer (Fr, Bloomer) finished eighth at the 2007 Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the discus at the Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium on the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (UIPUI) campus Friday.

Mayer scored her best mark of the day with her first throw of the day, a distance of 148-feet, 8-inches, her second-best mark of the season.

Throwing against predominately unattached performers and performers from NCAA Division I schools, Mayer was second in the first flight, and hung on for the eighth place finish as she fouled twice in the championship round.

MENOMONIE (May 29, 2007) - Jasmine Patzner (Jr, Taylor/Blair-Taylor) was named the most valuable UW-Stout track athlete and Sam Mayer (Fr, Bloomer) and Ashlea Peter (Fr, Wausau/Northland Lutheran) shared the most valuable field athlete award, Blue Devil coach Joe Harlan announced recently.

Patzner was consistently the Blue Devils' top hurdler throughout the season, and placed seventh in both the 100- and 400-hurdles at the WIAC outdoor championships and eighth at the WIAC indoor championships in the 55-hurdles. Patzner was also one of four team captains.

Mayer and Peter both advanced to the 2007 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Mayer in the discus and Peter in the triple jump.

Peter was fifth in the triple jump at the WIAC indoor and stepped up to be a conference champion in the triple jump at the conference outdoor championship. Peter also competed as a sprinter.

Mayer, who was coming off a basketball season that saw the Blue Devils take their third straight women's basketball title, did not compete during the indoor season, but made an impression during the outdoor season, finishing fourth in the discus at the WIAC outdoor championships. Mayer also competed in the high jump, finishing third at the outdoor championships.

Rachel Richardson (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) was named the most improved. Taylor Mayo (Jr, Iron River, Mich) and Erica Schweikert (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) were named most inspirational.

Also honored were the 2007 captains: Bridgette Crozier (Jr, Winona, Minn/Cotter), Stephanie Nichols (Sr, Chetek), Mayo and Patzner. Names as 2008 captains were: Crozier, Patzner, Jackie Bruchez (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn/Eastview) and Alyssa Klinkenberg (Jr, Roseville, Minn).
