STOUT COACH TODD STROP SAYS: "(Waldorf) is much improved over last year. Their key players are now juniors and seniors instead of freshmen and sophomores. They're a team that's found a way to win a couple of games. I'm glad we play them at home. The only thing we can control this week is Waldorf and we need to come ready to play. Iowa State almost got beaten by Army (last Saturday). Major upsets happen in college football because one team didn't come ready to play. We can't afford to do that. We need to get ourselves to 4-0." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; All games are broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com JOE SEEP PLACED ON D3FOOTBALL.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE (September 20, 2005) - UW-Stout defensive back Joe Seep (Sr, Reedsburg) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after Stout's 24-7 win over Springfield College, Sept. 17. BLUE DEVILS TAKE IT ON THE CHIN AT EAU CLAIRE INVITE EAU CLAIRE (September 24, 2005) - UW-Stout suffered two losses in the second day of the Lisa Siegenthaler Memorial Volleyball Tournament at UW-Eau Claire Saturday. The Blue Devils (10-7) lost to Millikin University, 26-30, 30-25, 32-30, 30-25 in the opener, then were shutout by UW-River Falls, 31-29, 30-23, 30-23, in the afternoon match. Sarah McElfresh (Jr, Osceola) had 13 kills and Linda Meyer (So, Cedarburg) 12 in Stout's loss to Millikin. Hitting and receiving serve proved to be Stout's downfall against the Falcons. Stout hit at only a .073 pace and allowed the Falcons 12 service aces. Meyer had nine kills, while Lacey Bunkelman (Fr, Chippewa Falls) had eight. Meyer was named to the all-tournament team. Meyer finished the tournament averaging 2.81 kills per game (45 total), had four service aces, averaged three digs per game (48 total) and had two solo blocks and six assisted blocks. Stout will host Northwestern College, Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., UW-Whitewater, Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. and UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 1 at noon. COMEBACK OVER POINTERS GETS STOUT BACK IN RIGHT DIRECTIONEAU CLAIRE (September 23, 2005) - Badly needing a win to get back on the right track, UW-Stout used stick-to-it-iveness to gut out a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe UW-Stevens Point Friday evening during Round 2 of the annual Siegenthaler Memorial Tournament. Having lost three straight matches, all to WIAC adversaries, Stout fell behind the Pointers, 2-1, winning the first game, 30-22, and dropping the second and third contests, 30-27 and 30-19, respectively. On the cusp of suffering another confidence-depleting loss, the Blue Devil players stepped up big in crunch time, earning 30-14 and 15-12 victories in the final two games. Linda Meyer (So, Cedarburg) totaled a team-high 15 kills for the Blue Devils, while Sarah McElfresh (Jr, Osceola) and Jenny McDermid (Jr, Oconto Falls) reached double figures in the department with 12 and 10, respectively. Kat Roesler (Jr, Chippewa Falls) dished out a team-high 26 assists, while Rachel Linbo (Sr, Stewartville, Minn) recorded four service aces and tallied 12 digs. Meghan Geis and Shelly Maus netted 12 kills apiece for the Pointers. Toni Johnson collected 19 assists and Sarah Thompson contributed 18 digs. BLUGOLDS AVENGE EARLIER LOSS TO BLUE DEVILSEAU CLAIRE (September 23, 2005) - UW-Stout saw its four-match winning streak over Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) rival UW-Eau Claire end in resounding fashion Friday afternoon in the first round of the Blugolds' annual Siegenthaler Memorial Tournament. After the teams split the first two games, Eau Claire finished strong in garnering the 30-20, 24-30, 30-24, 30-25 victory that both allowed the Blugolds to avenge a 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-28) setback to the Blue Devils Sept. 14 in Menomonie and represented Stout's third consecutive loss after it won nine of its first 11 matches in 2005. Stout fell to 9-5 on the year, while Eau Claire improved to 12-1. Sarah McElfresh (Jr, Osceola) paced Stout in kills with 11, while Linda Meyer (So, Cedarburg) collected nine and Lacey Bunkelman (Fr, Chippewa Falls) and Natalie Naaktgeboren (So, Maple Lake, Minn) pitched in eight apiece. Meanwhile, Eau Claire earned a .289 hitting percentage, including an unfathomable .636 performance in the opening game. Molly Menard paced Eau Claire in kills with 18, while Jenny Wolter added 16. Carly Freiborg distributed 55 assists for the 'Golds and Shanna Berger picked up 29 digs. FALCONS HANDLE BLUE DEVILS IN THREE GAMESRIVER FALLS (September 21, 2005) - With two of the games down to the wire - and beyond - UW-River Falls came out on top of UW-Stout, 3-0, Wednesday, in a WIAC volleyball contest. The Falcons (5-6, 1-2) took a 31-29, 30-20, 31-29, decision at Karges Center in River Falls as Stout (9-4, 2-2) seemed to struggle to put together a consistent night hitting. No Blue Devils got into double digits in kills, with Lacey Bunkelman (Fr, Chippewa Falls) racking up eight kills. Jenny McDermid (Jr, Oconto Falls) finished with seven kills. Natalie Naaktgeboren (So, Maple Lake, Minn) recorded six block assists. The Falcons' Kate Thompson led all players with 12 kills and had five block assists. The 21st ranked Blue Devils hit at a .127 clip for the night and actually posted a negative hitting percentage in the final game, collecting 10 errors to nine kills to hit minus-.028.
POINTERS TRIP UP BLUE DEVILS IN OVERTIME MENOMONIE (September 24, 2005) - UW-Stevens Point scored with 21 seconds remaining in the first overtime to hand UW-Stout their first loss of the season as the Pointers carried a 1-0 win out of Nelson Field, Saturday. The Pointers' Amanda Prawat took a pass from Ali Havlik in front of the net and lofted the ball to the high left corner of the net past a diving Charla Buxbaum (Fr, Hermantown, Minn) to score the win. The Blue Devils (4-1-2, 1-1-1 WIAC) controlled the ball for much of the final 16 minutes of the game, but could not pierce the Pointers' (5-2-1, 2-0-1) defense. The Blue Devils' had three good chances around the six minute mark in regulation, with perhaps the best shot coming off a corner kick that Liz Eldred (So, Wentworth) hit with her knee that went just high of the net. "We played 99 great minutes of soccer," Blue Devil coach Dave Morris said. "Our habits have to be better. We got caught watching the ball." The Pointers took 16 shots with 10 shots on goal. Buxbaum recorded nine saves and was saddled with her first collegiate loss. The Blue Devils took 11 shots and put six shots on goal that were stopped by Meredith DeCaluwe. The loss was Stout's first loss in overtime since the 1999 season. BEAULIEU TAKES OVER BLUE DEVIL GYMNASTICS PROGRAM
MENOMONIE (September 19, 2005) - A former national champion joins the UW-Stout athletic department staff as the Blue Devils' gymnastics coach. Becky Beaulieu - who captured back-to-back floor exercise titles at the 1998 and 1999 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships while competing for UW-La Crosse - enters the position with quality coaching experience. Beaulieu recently coached Level 4-10 gymnasts at the Maui (Hawaii) Gymnastics Academy (MGA), mentoring four athletes to the Level 9-10 USAG Regional Meet and one athlete to a fifth-place finish in the all-around at the Level 10 Junior Olympic Nationals. Beaulieu (pronounced bowl-ee-oh) served as a graduate assistant coach for perennial NCGA powerhouse La Crosse from 2001-03, with the Eagles winning two NCGA crowns during that span. "I hope to motivate the women to expect more from themselves," said Beaulieu, who takes over a program that qualified three individuals to the NCGA Championships a year ago. "It is my end goal for each student-athlete to reach her potential as a collegiate gymnast and student. By doing so, the level of excellence displayed by the team should improve. I aspire for the Blue Devil gymnastics team to be able to compete with the top teams in the region. I plan to look for leadership from our seniors, Rhian Paulson and Shanna Kissinger." Beaulieu competed for La Crosse from 1997-2001, as Becky McDonnell, establishing a since-eclipsed school floor exercise record score of 9.8. A seven-time NCGA All-American, she garnered all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) honors nine time. The Eagles, for which she was a two-year captain, won two NCGA titles during her competing days. A Shoreview, Minn., native, Beaulieu earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and minor in business administration from La Crosse, graduating in 2001. In 2002, she obtained a master's degree in education and school psychology from La Crosse. After working as a school psychologist in the Anoka-Hennepin (Minn.) School District, Beaulieu worked as a school psychologist at the Maui (Hawaii) District Office for one year. Beaulieu resides in Hudson with her husband, Jeremy.

Hovet earned first-team all-WWIAC softball accolades in 1994 - the only year she played softball at Stout - and ranks 12th on the Blue Devils all-time single-season fielding percentage list. An assistant basketball coach at Stout (1994-95) and UW-River Falls (1995-2000), Hovet has posted a 69-59 record in her five years as head coach at River Falls. During the 2000-01 season, Hovet coached the Falcons to an 11-5 WIAC record and a tie for third place in the league, earning WIAC Coach of the Year honors in the process. Alissa Proshek A two-year Blue Devil captain and two-time team MVP, Proshek earned first-team all-WWIAC honors in 1992, 1993 and 1994. Proshek holds the following school records: single-season service aces (104), career service aces (343), career attempts (3,966), career digs (1,463) and career kills (1,561). Proshek, who paced Stout in aces three times and kills twice, led the Blue Devils to a 33-6 (7-1 WWIAC) season mark, second-place WWIAC finish and Stout's first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 1994. Proshek pursued other professional endeavors after a brief coaching career and currently resides in Columbia Heights, Minn. Tom McNamara Along with two previous UW-Stout Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, Glenn LaChapelle (1970-73) and Terry Watkins (1970-73), McNamara (1970-73) played on a line recognized by the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame as the highest-scoring line in college hockey history at any level for its prowess in 1973. McNamara complemented LaChapelles 65 goals and Watkins 45 with 39 of his own. McNamara, Stouts 1973 MVP, tallied 61 points at Stout, scoring 23 goals and 38 assists. Since graduating from Stout in 1973, McNamara has been employed at one company: ITT Thermotech. McNamara currently resides in Mendota Heights, Minn., along with his wife and three children. McNamara coaches youth hockey, football and baseball. Pete Binelas The quintessential student-athlete for the Blue Devils from 1990-94, Binelas is second in Stout mens basketball records for single-season 3-pointers made (67) and holds the single-season 3-point percentage (47.6 percent) mark, while ranking fourth on Stouts career 3-pointers made list with 141. Just as impressively, Binelas - who holds the programs record for most career games played (103) and stands second on the Blue Devils all-time scoring list with 1,492 points - earned WSUC Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete honors in 1994 and Academic All-American honors that same year. A two-year team captain (1992-93, 1993-94), Binelas three-times earned all-WSUC honors. After graduating from Stout magna cum laude in 1995, Binelas played professional basketball in Greece from 1999-2000. Binelas, who donates a considerable amount of time to United Way, is employed by the United Parcel Service (UPS), and currently resides in Oak Creek. Gary Busch Busch and 1999 Stout Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Dan Larson pitched Stout to an NAIA College World Series appearance in 1989. In 1990, Busch led the Blue Devils to back-to-back NAIA College World Series showings. Busch shares, with Larson, Stouts record for all-time victories (24). Busch owns the programs career winning percentage mark (.727) and ranks second on the career innings pitched list, with 206. In 1990, Busch earned all-WSUC, all-District 14, all-Area IV, second-team all-NAIA and second-team Academic All-American honors. That year, Busch was the Area IV Player of the Year. The Blue Devils won three WSUC and three District 14 crowns during Buschs years. Busch is presently employed by Potter Farm & Tie, and currently resides in Appleton. Bob Thomas Setting an example his son, Mark (Stout's womens basketball coach and assistant baseball and football coach), has since mirrored, Bob Thomas deeply impacted several Blue Devil athletic programs, developing numerous All-American student-athletes along the way.The elder Thomas, a 2004 UW-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, has played an integral role for Blue Devil athletics since 1986. As an offensive and special teams assistant coach for the football team, Thomas helped develop five All-American players.
