WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
COURTNEY ZAFFT SOFTBALL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER MENOMONIE (May 14, 2006) - Senior third baseman Courtney Zafft (Rochester, Minn/Century) was selected as the most valuable player of the UW-Stout softball team. Zafft, a four-year starter for the Blue Devils, was an All-WIAC honorable mention pick who batted .286 (34-for-119) with 14 runs scored, six doubles, a triple and two home runs. Zafft also received the team's most dedicated award. Jackie Juan (So, La Crosse/Central) received the teams slugger award. Juan picked up where she started last season as a freshman, and that was hitting the long ball, finishing the season with six. Juan hit .288 (32-for-111) with four doubles, a triple and 16 runs batted in. Kara Martyn (So, Edgar) fielded the golden glove award with a fielding percentage of .952, committing only seven errors in 146 chances. Amanda McKellips (Fr, Mosinee) took home rookie of the year honors. McKellips hit .245 (24-of-98) with 16 RBI, 13 runs scored, three doubles, a triple and three home runs, including a walk-off grand slam to defeat UW-La Crosse. Tara Donohue (Fr, Littlefork, Minn/Big Falls) was named most improved and received the team's spirit award. Playing at first base the first half of the season and in left field during the second half, Donahue posted a team best fielding percentage of .984, committing only two errors in 127 chances. Kasey Johnson (Fr, Greenwood) came off the bench to be named super-sub.
SETH MAIER NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE (May 9, 2006) - In seven games last week, UW-Stout shortstop Seth Maier (Jr, Park Falls) collected 14 runs batted in and was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the week. Maier hit .448 (13-for-29) with 10 runs scored, two doubles, one triple and two home runs, including a grand slam in a 15-9 win over UW-Oshkosh on May 5. In a four-game series against the Titans, Maier batted .500 (9-for-18) with seven runs scored and nine runs batted in. He had four multi-hit games on the week, including three three-hit performances and five multi-RBI contests. UW-Stout went 4-3 on the last week of the season, splitting a series with UW-Oshkosh, sweeping Northland and losing to Viterbo. The Blue Devils had a game with St. Thomas rained out.
TRIO SHARE MOST VALUABLE WOMEN'S TRACK AWARDS MENOMONIE (May 14, 2006) - Nikki Sims (Jr, Becker, Minn/Big Lake), Jasmine Patzner (So, Taylor/Blair-Taylor) and Bridgette Crozier (So, Winona, Minn/Cotter) were named the most valuable performers for the 2006 UW-Stout women's track and field team. Sims was named as most valuable field athlete, while Patzner and Crozier shared the most valuable track athlete award. Sims expanded her field from a jumper to becoming the team's top multi-event participant. Sims placed fourth at the conference outdoor meet in the heptathlon and finished fourth at the St. Benedict Heptathlon. During the indoor season, Sims placed fifth at the conference meet in the triple jump and seventh in the long. Patzner was a Blue Devils' leader in the hurdles, and also was a member of Stout's record setting 4x200-meter indoor relay team. Crozier ran the long distances for the Blue Devils, running predominately the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs. Crozier won the 10,000 at the Phil Esten Challenge, was second in the 5000 at the Washington Twilite and won the 3000-meter run at the UW-Stout Indoor Open. Sprinter Oriana Zens (So, Fergus Falls, Minn) was named the most improved and the most inspirational award went to Sam Strunk (Jr, Athens). Team captains Camelle Meyer (Sr, Plainview, Minn), Leah Karaliunas (Sr, Oconomowoc) and Strunk were recognized. Team captains for the 2007 season are Patzner, Crozier, Taylor Mayo (So, Iron River, Mich) and Stephanie Nichols (Jr, Chetek).
KAWSKI, GONZENBACH TAKE TOP MEN'S TRACK LAURELS MENOMONIE (May 14, 2006) - Ryan Kawski (Jr, Stevens Point) and Derek Gonzenbach (Jr, Milbank, SD) were named the top performers of the UW-Stout men's track and field team. Kawski was named the field performer of the year and Gonzenbach the track performer of the year. Both performers have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Champions and both provisionally qualified to the NCAA indoor meet. Kawski took a second place finish at the WIAC outdoor championships in the discus and placed sixth at the WIAC indoor championships in breaking the school record in the 35-lb weight throw (57-0.75). Kawski also competed this season in the hammer throw and the shot put, both indoors and outdoors. Gonzenbach won his second consecutive WIAC indoor 400-meter title, coming from seventh in the preliminary race to win the event at Stevens Point. His mark of 49.06 seconds in the event sent him to the national indoor championships. Gonzenbach placed third at the WIAC outdoor meet in the 400-meter hurdles and provisionally qualified in the event. Sprinter, jumper and hurdler Kendall Wade (Fr, Milwaukee/Bay View) was named freshman MVP; sprinter Wendell Eskridge (So, Milwaukee/Custer) was named sophomore MVP; Gonzenbach was named junior MVP; and mid-distance runner Mark Kempen (Sr, Kaukauna/Freedom) was named senior MVP. Kempen and Zak Germo (Sr, Mapleton, Minn) were recognized as 2006 captains. Germo also received the Tim Faber Team Award. Named captains for 2007 were: Gonzenbach, Kawski, Matt Delaney (Jr, Ham Lake, Minn/Irondale) and Ryan Carpenter (Jr, Sauk City/Sauk Prairie). Updated: May 15, 2006 |
