BLUE DEVILS BOW OUT OF WIAC TOURNAMENT IN FIRST ROUND MENOMONIE (May 5, 2006) - The UW-Stout softball season came to a screeching end as the Blue Devils lost the play-in game to UW-River Falls, 10-0, in five innings Friday at Wakanda Park. Played in a chilly early morning drizzle, the Falcons (21-17-1) heated things up with an eight run fifth inning, that was ended by a two-out, grand slam home run by Mindy Rudiger. The Blue Devils (8-29) managed three hits and stranded all six base runners. STOUT CLOSES OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH ONE RUN LOSSESST. PAUL, Minn (May 2, 2006) - In a season where games frequently have been determined by one run, it was fitting that UW-Stout wrapped up the regular season with two one-run losses Tuesday. Stout dropped a 1-0, 6-5, decision to Hamline University. Stout (8-28) was held to two hits in the opener, with Courtney Zafft (Sr, Rochester, Minn) and Jackie Juan (So, La Crosse) picking up Stout's only runs. The Pipers (19-19) scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning and made the run stand up. In the nightcap, Hamline jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Stout scored two runs in the fifth inning, then went ahead, 5-3, with three runs in the sixth inning. But Hamline came through with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then shut Stout out in the seventh to preserve the win. Amanda McKellips (Fr, Mosinee) hit her third home run of the season and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. The single run losses were Stout's ninth and tenth, respectively, for the season.
BLUE DEVILS FALL FLAT IN FINAL HOME GAME LOSS TO VITERBO MENOMONIE (May 7, 2006) - UW-Stout came out flat and allowed Viterbo University to build a five run lead after two innings and the V-Hawks went on to a 10-4 win Sunday. Viterbo (12-37-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then tagged on two more in the second. It was all uphill for Stout (16-21) after that, and the hill kept getting steeper. Stout final got on the board in the third inning on an RBI single by Erik Johnson (So, La Crosse), then pulled to within three runs in the fourth when Sean Wilson (Fr, Woodbury, Minn) grounded into a double play, but scored Matt Krause (So, Bonduel) from third base. Viterbo had an answer for that two more runs in the fifth. Stout stayed in the game when Johnson drove in a run in the fifth with a double to centerfield. Two more Viterbo runs in the eighth put Stout in a 9-3 hole. Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) tightened the gap slightly with a run scoring double in the bottom of the eighth. Viterbo wrapped up the scoring with a bases loaded walk in the ninth. Johnson led all batters, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Schneider was 2-for-5 and Luke Schultz (Jr, Menomonie) was 2-for-3. Viterbo's Charley Karthas was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Mike Wendland and Chris Kuhl were each 2-for-5 with Wendland driving in two runs. Ryan Gilbertson and Kelly Chambers were 2-for-4. OSHKOSH SWEEPS STOUT IN FINAL CONFERENCE SERIESOSHKOSH (May 6, 2006) - UW-Oshkosh dashed UW-Stout's chances for a WIAC playoff bid by sweeping the Blue Devils, 4-3, 12-5, Saturday. In the opening game, Oshkosh (27-13, 16-8) scored three runs in the third inning, then got the eventual game winner in the next inning when Mike Waupoose opened the inning with a lead off home run. Stout (16-20. 11-11) scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh inning. Matt Krause (So, Bonduel), Tanner Kattre (Fr, Abbotsford) and Seth Maier (Jr, Park Falls) each drove in a run. The Blue Devils had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, but were gunned down at home. Stout took a 2-0 lead in the second game, with Maier driving a run in the first and Kattre scoring while another Blue Devil got caught in a run down. Oshkosh cut the lead in half, 2-1, with an unearned run in the second. Oshkosh exploded for seven runs in the fourth, then tacked on four more in the eighth. Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Maier was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Bryan Schwebke and Waupoose were 3-for-5 for the Titans. BLUE DEVILS KEEP WIAC PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVEOSHKOSH (May 5, 2006) - UW-Stout rolled up 31 runs and 33 hits on their way to a 15-9, 16-5, sweep at UW-Oshkosh Friday, keeping the Blue Devils chances for a WIAC playoff berth alive. The two teams meet again on Saturday, and a sweep over the Titans would give the Blue Devils (16-18, 11-9) a chance to advance to the tournament for the first time since 1999. Of the 18 innings of ball played, Stout scored in 11 innings against the Titans. The Blue Devils attacked early and often in the opener, jumping out to a 6-0 lead after two innings - highlighted by Seth Maier's (Jr, Park Falls) second inning grand slam - then extended that to 9-0 before Oshkosh (25-13, 14-8) scored a run in the fourth. Stout added three run sin the sixth, two more in the eighth and a solo run in the ninth. The Titans scored two runs in the sixth and eighth, and got to starter and winner Nick Klaren (Fr, North St. Paul, Minn) for four runs in the seventh. Maier went 3-for-4. Dan Olson (Jr, Eau Claire) was 3-for-6 with three RBI and Matt Krause (So, Bonduel) was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Olson, Krause and Tanner Kattre (Fr, Abbotsford) each had home runs. In the second game, Olson went to the mound and pitched nine innings of strong ball, allowing all five earned runs, but striking out nine. This game was close through the first six innings. Oshkosh took a 2-0 lead in the second, but Stout took a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run home run by Maier and an RBI by Luke Schultz (Jr, Menomonie). Stout added a run sin the fourth, but Oshkosh tied the score at 4-4 with two of their own runs in the bottom of the fourth. Stout took the lead for good in the fifth on RBIs by Erik Johnson (So, La Crosse) and Adam Olson (Sr, Mosinee), then exploded for four runs in the seventh and six in the ninth. Eric Paul (So, Wisconsin Rapids) had a two run single in the seventh and Krause got Stout started in the ninth with a three-run home run. Schultz went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Paul was 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Maier and Krause were 2-for-5. BLUE DEVILS PREP FOR WEEKEND BY SWEEPING NORTHLANDASHLAND (May 3, 2006) - Tanner Kattre (Fr, Abbotsford) drove in two RBIs in each of two consecutive innings as UW-Stout jumped all over Northland College for an 11-4 first game win, then held the Lumberjacks to one run in the second game, sweeping the series with a 7-1 win. Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth inning of the opener, Kattre tied the game in the inning when he scored off Eric Paul's (So, Wisconsin Rapids) single. Kattre helped open up the next inning as Stout scored six runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Kattre drove in two runs with a double in the fifth, then backed that up two run single in the sixth inning. Seth Maier (Jr, Park Falls) went 3-for-5 in the game with two RBI, driving in Stout's first in the first inning, then adding another in the six run fifth. Adam Olson (Sr, Mosinee) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Luke Schultz (Jr, Menomonie) was 3-for-3 with an RBI. The Blue Devils (14-18) were never seriously threatened in the second game. Maier and Olson hit back-to-back triples in the first inning to give Stout a 2-0 lead. Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) singled in a run in the second. Stout added single runs in the fourth and fifth, and two in the sixth. Maier drove in three runs in the contest, while going 1-for-2. Andy Lorenzen (Fr, Menomonie) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. On the day, Stout pitchers gave up only one walk and surrendered only three earned runs. Joe Chittum (Fr, Wausau) got the win in the first game, his first collegiate win and Matt Doornink (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) got the win in the second, his first collegiate win.
