OSHKOSH TAKES TWO FROM BLUE DEVIL FASTPITCH OSHKOSH (April 9, 2006) - UW-Stout dropped two conference games to UW-Oshkosh Sunday, 5-1, 5-0. The Blue Devils (5-15, 0-4) scored their only run of the day in the second inning of the first game when Tara Donahue (Fr, Littlefork, Minn) drove in Megan Donley (Sr, Fridley, Minn), who reached on a two-out double. The Titans (16-10, 6-0) promptly answered back with four-run fourth inning, aided by two Stout errors. The Titans added a final run in the sixth inning. Donley, who took the loss on the mound, led Stout at the plate, going 2-for-3. Donley allowed only one earned run and struck out two. Whitney Tyriver was 3-for-3 for the Titans and Ronessa Stampfli took the win with 10 strikeouts. Oshkosh scored three run on three hits and two Stout errors in the second inning, the added two more runs in the fifth inning. The Blue Devils collected five hits, but wound up stranding nine runners. Beth Lloyd (So, Fond du Lac) was 2-for-3. No Titan had more than one hit, but six individuals did, including Dani Olson and Sarah LeMahieu, who each drove in two runs. Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 12, then will host UW-Superior, Friday, April 14 at noon. BLUE DEVILS DROP CONFERENCE OPENERS TO WHITEWATER WHITEWATER (April 8, 2006) - UW-Whitewater took a pair of games from UW-Stout in the conference opener for Stout, taking an 11-3, six-inning first game, then rallying for an 8-7 win in the second contest. Courtney Zafft (Sr, Rochester, Minn) lifted two home runs in the first game - including a lead off home run in the first inning - but it wouldn't be enough as Whitewater combined for 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings, eight in the sixth inning to end the game. Stout's other run came on a solo home run by Jackie Juan (So, La Crosse) in the third inning. Stout (5-13, 0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game on Zafft's round tripper, but the Warhawks (13-5, 2-2) tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. Zafft and Juan gave Stout a 3-1 lead in the third inning and Stout held the lead until Whitewater's Suzanne Gersich tied the game with a two run home run in the fifth. The Warhawks added back-to-back home runs in the sixth - a two run shot by Ashley Trawotzki and a solo shot by Erin Langon - and went on to add six more runs to end the game on the eight-run rule. Juan gave Stout a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, smashing a grand-slam for her fourth home run of the year. Stout added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run single by Nelly Peterson (Fr, Cumberland). Whitewater pulled to within one run, 6-5, with a five-run fourth inning as Stout contributed two errors. The Blue Devils added an unearned run in the fifth to jump up, 7-5. An RBI double by Whitewater's Amy Gahl and a two-run home run by Sarah Schauf gave the Warhawks enough margin to eke out the win. Juan was 3-for-4 to lead all hitters in the second game. BLUE DEVILS BREAK SKID, BLANK NORTHWESTERN TWICEST. PAUL, Minn. (April 4, 2006) - UW-Stout broke a 10-game losing streak and, in the process, gave both of their freshmen pitchers their first collegiate shutouts as the Blue Devils defeated Northwestern College, 3-0, and 14-0, Tuesday. Jessica Glasgow (Fr, St. Paul, Minn) struck out four and walked only one her way to four hitter in the first game.Savanah Oeltjen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) scored what would be the eventual game winning run, leading off the third inning with a double. She was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Justine Lehmann (Jr, Luck), then beat the throw home on a fielder's choice by Courtney Zafft (Sr, Rochester, Minn). Jackie Juan (So, La Crosse) scored Stout's two other runs, one in the fourth and another in the sixth. In the nightcap, the Blue Devils exploded for their largest run production of the season and matched their best hitting performance with 13 hits, backing up a one-hit performance by Katie Fitcher (Fr, Baraboo). Fitcher tossed 3.1 innings, facing only 11 batters and striking out five. Megan Donley (Sr, Fridley, Minn) came on to face the final six batters, striking out three, in her first appearance in more than three weeks. Stout had two big innings, scoring five runs in the first and seven in the third. Stout stole seven bases in the game as the Blue Devils tallied nine stolen bases on the day, doubling their season total. Zafft was 3-for-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and an RBI. Juan was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Lloyd was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Oeltjen was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
BLUE DEVILS SWEPT BY WHITEWATER MENOMONIE (April 9, 2006) - UW-Stout was cruising along with a 2-0 lead, then fell on hard times to drop the opener with UW-Whitewater, 7-5, then lost the second game, 10-4, Sunday at Nelson Field. Adam Olson (Sr, Mosinee) lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Nick Klaren (Fr, North St. Paul, Minn) singled in a run in the fifth to give Stout (3-14, 3-7) a 2-0 lead, but a five-run sixth inning by Whitewater (12-6, 5-1) put a damper on the Blue Devils' day. The Warhawks pounded out five hits with Jason Rutz driving in two runs on a single to left. Whitewater added two more runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-2 lead. Stout answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Seth Meier (Jr, Park Falls) drove in a run with a dboule down the left field line and Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) delivered a two run single up the middle. Stout left two runners in the inning, then went down in order in the ninth inning. Rutz was 2-for-4 with two RBI for Whitewater and two runs scored. Bill Gorman was 2-for-3 and Jordan Stine was 2-for-4 and each had an RBI. Maier was 2-for-5 for the Blue Devils. In the second game, Whitewater scored twice in the second inning, four times in the fourth and once in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead. Maier and Olson each drove in a run in the sixth inning - Olson on a double - to put Stout on the board, trailing 7-2. Erik Johnson (So, La Crosse) pulled Stout a little closer in the seventh inning with an RBI single to right field, but Warhawks got that back in the eighth on a suicide squeeze by Stine. Stine drove in two more runs in the top of the ninth to take a 10-3 lead. Stout scored the final run of the game when Maier reached on an error that allowed Luke Schultz (So, Menomonie) to score from second. Stine led all hitters by going 2-for-3 with five RBI. Mike Jacobson was 3-for-5. Rutz was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Both Johnson and Maier were 2-for-5 with an RBI. Stout will host Lawrence University, Tuesday, April 11 in a non-conference contest at 1 p.m. STOUT RALLY COMES UP SHORT IN FIRST GAME, DROP BOTH GAMESMENOMONIE (April 8, 2006) - Big innings again proved to be costly as UW-Stout dropped both ends of a doubleheader to defending national champion UW-Whitewater, 12-10, 11-4, Saturday. The Blue Devils (3-12, 3-5) allowed a six run seventh inning by Whitewater (10-6, 3-1) in the first game, but nearly overcame the deficit. No such rally occurred in the second game as the Warhawks posted a five run fifth inning for the win. After Whitewater pulled to a 12-2 lead after six innings, they left Stout virtually dead, but the Blue Devils came alive in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded with two outs and down by 10 runs, Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) chipped a bloop single between three Warhawk players behind first base to score one run and open the floodgates. Luke Schultz (Jr, Menomonie) singled in two runs, Seth Maier (Jr, Park Falls) singled in a run and Dustin Quinn (Fr, Rice Lake) scored on an error to pull Stout to within five runs, 12-7. After holding the Warhawks scoreless in the eighth, Nick Klaren (Fr, North St. Paul, Minn) drove in two runs wit a single up the middle and Bryan Vilstrup's (So, Frederic) fielder's choice pulled Stout to within two runs, 12-10. Stout held Whitewater scoreless again in the ninth, then put two on base in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded both runners. Sam Petrasko was 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Warhawks and Ben Prather was 3-for-4. Schultz was 1-for-5 for the Blue Devils, but drove in three runs. In the nightcap, Whitewater took a 4-1 lead through the third inning - Maier hit a solo home run in the first for Stout - before Stout knotted the score with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Schneider scored on an error and Maier and Tanner Kattre (Fr, Abbotsford) each doubled in a run. The Warhawks scored five runs in the fifth, three on catcher Matt Schliewe's home run to left field. Whitewater scored solo runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Maier was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs for the Blue Devils. Jason Rutz went 3-for-5 for Whitewater. Whitewater finished with 18 hits in the first game, 15 in the second. Stout had 10 hits in the opener, nine in the second. POINTERS PUSH BLUE DEVILS BACK TO EVEN IN CONFERENCE PLAYMENOMONIE (April 5, 2006) - UW-Stout more or less controlled the first three innings of both games, but conference favorite UW-Stevens Point controlled the rest of the innings as the Pointers pushed Stout back to .500 in conference play with 15-5 and 7-2 decisions Wednesday. In the opener, Stout (3-10, 3-3) was sailing along well, taking a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning. The Pointers (9-5, 5-0) broke the game wide open with some help from Stout, which committed three errors - Stout's only errors of the game. Stevens Point scored 11 runs in the inning, all unearned. The Pointers added three more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to push the score to 15-3. Stout added two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Tanner Kattre's (Fr, Abbotsford) double, but Stout could not push the game past the 10-run rule and the game ended. The scenario was similar in the second game, but much more tenuous. Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) smacked out his first of two RBI in the game with a single in the third inning, scoring Matt Krause (So, Bonduel), who led off the inning with a double. The Pointers scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a triple by Chuck Brehm. Schneider drove in his second run of the game in the fifth, doubling to left field and again bringing Krause home to pull Stout to within 3-2. But the Pointers scored single runs in each of the final four innings to stay undefeated in conference play. Schneider was 2-for-3 with the two RBI for the Blue Devils, who were held to five hits. Brehm was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI triple for the Pointers. Adam Evanoff was 2-for-4, with two run scoring doubles. In the first game for the Pointers, Brehm was 3-for-4, while Evanhoff produced three RBI. Tim Schlosser was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Jordan Zimmermann was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Kattre was 2-for-4 for Stout with three RBI. BOTTOM OF ORDER HELPS CAPTURE FIRST SWEEP OF THE SEASONLA CROSSE (April 3, 2006) - UW-Stout captured their first sweep of the season with a lot of help from the bottom of their line-up as the Blue Devils downed UW-La Crosse, 15-10, 6-2, Monday. In the opener, Stout's seventh, eighth and ninth batters combined to go 11-for-14 with seven runs scored and 10 RBI. Erik Johnson (So, La Crosse) was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI, while Matt Krause (So, Bonduel) was 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Tim Schneider (So, West Salem) finished 3-for-4 with four RBI. The Blue Devils finished with a season-high 19 hits in the game. The La Crosse connection in this game was evident as Rob Heller (Jr, Coon Valley) came on in relief to pick up his first win of the season. Heller and Johnson played their high school ball at La Crosse Central, while Schneider played at nearby Onalaska Lutheran. The Eagles (5-11, 1-3) opened the day with a three run first inning, but Stout (3-8, 3-1) tied the score in the second on a two run single by Krause and an RBI by Dustin Quinn (Fr, Rice Lake). Stout scored four times in the third, highlighted by a three run double by Schneider, and once in the fourth for an 8-5 lead before the Eagles cut it 8-6 in the fourth and 8-7 after six. Stout jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the seventh, but the Eagles knotted the score in their half of the inning. Stout took a 12-10 lead on Krause's two-run eighth inning single and the Blue Devils plated three runs in the ninth on back-to-back homers by Seth Maier (Jr, Park Falls) and Tanner Kattre (Fr, Abbotsford). Heller pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk with two strikeouts. Tony Brehm took the loss for the Eagles, lasting only 2.2 inning, allowing five runs, four earned. In the second game, Nick Klaren (Fr, North St. Paul, Minn) earned the win, going the full nine innings, scattering 11 hits, but only two runs, one earned, and struck out four. Stout took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and the Eagles tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the fifth. Kattre gave Stout the lead for good with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Stout added solo runs in the seventh and ninth. La Crosse had a last gasp run in the ninth, aided by two errors. Luke Schultz (Jr, Menomonie) went 4-for-5 for the Blue Devils with two RBI and two runs scored, while Johnson continued his hot streak by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.Six Blue Devil starters hit .400 or better on the day. Krause led the way going 5-for-7 (.714) with four runs scored and four RBI; Johnson was 6-for-9 (.667) with six runs scored and two RBI; Schultz was 5-for-9 (.556) with three runs and three RBI; Schneider was 3-for-7 (.429) with five RBI; Kattre was 4-for-10 (.400) with three runs scored and four RBI on two home runs; and Maier was 4-for-10 (.400) with three runs scored and two RBI. As a team, Stout went 30-of-79 (.380) with 21 runs.
