PAULSON CLOSES OUT GYMNASTICS CAREER WITH ALL-AMERICAN BROCKPORT, NY (March 25, 2006) - UW-Stout's Rhian Paulson (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) closed out her gymnastics career on a high note, earning All-America honors on the floor exercise at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) championships, Saturday. Paulson finished tied for third on the floor exercise to earn her second All-America award in as many days. Paulson had made All-America honors Friday in the all-around. Paulson scored a 9.65 Saturday, and combined with a 9.70 in the preliminaries totaled 19.325, tying with Julia Zimmerman of MIT. The top six finishers are named All-American. RHIAN PAULSON EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS IN ALL-AROUNDBROCKPORT, NY (March 24, 2006) - UW-Stout's Rhian Paulson (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) earned All-American honors by placing 10th in the all-around at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) championships Friday at SUNY-Brockport. Paulson scored a 36.575 to earn her first All-American award. The top 10 all-arounders earn All-America honors. Paulson also placed third in the preliminaries of the floor exercise with a 9.70 and will advance to the finals in the event Saturday. Paulson scored a 9.45 on the vault, 8.75 on the uneven bars and an 8.675 on the balance beam. Ashley Timm (So, Eden Prairie, Minn) took 14th in the all-around, scoring a 36.125. Timm scored a 9.425 on the floor, 9.05 on the balance beam, 8.375 on the bars and 9.275 on the vault.
BLUE DEVILS OPEN WIAC SEASON AT LA CROSSE MENOMONIE (March 27, 2006) - UW-Stout will be in search of their first win of the season when they travel to UW-La Crosse (2-8) to open the WIAC schedule, Saturday, April 1. The Blue Devils took three of four games from the Eagles last season.
BLUE DEVIL SOFTBALL DROPS TWO AT COE COLLEGE TOURNAMENT CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 26, 2006) - UW-Stout lost two games in the second day of the Coe College Classic Sunday. The Blue Devils lost to host Coe College, 8-0, in five inning, then lost 5-1 to Monmouth College in their final game. The Blue Devils (3-11) were held to three hits against Coe, the same team they met in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs last season. The Cohawks (13-5) and Stout played scoreless until the third inning when Coe scored two runs. They tacked on a third in the fourth and put the game away with a five-run fifth inning. Monmouth (5-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and it would take until the third inning before the Blue Devils would get their only run of the day. Kara Martyn (Jr, Edgar) drove in Savanah Oeltjen (So, Spring Valley, Minn), who led off the inning with a walk, with a single to left field. Monmouth added two runs in the sixth inning. Stout had an opportunity to score in the fifth inning, bur stranded runners at second and third. Amanda McKellips (Fr, Mosinee) and Martyn each had two hits in the game. McKellips was one of only three Stout hitters to get a hit in the first game.Stout is off until Tuesday, April 4 when they travel to Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn. BLUE DEVILS FALL TWICE AT COE COLLEGE TOURNAMENTCEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (March 25, 2006) - UW-Stout fell twice in the first day of the Coe College Classic Saturday as the Blue Devils lost, 9-4, to Central College and 12-4 to Simpson College. Stout (3-9) played catch-up the entire game with Central (11-3). The Dutch jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring three runs in both the second and third innings. Stout broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth when Amanda McKellips' (Fr, Mosinee) brought home Courtney Zafft (Sr, Rochester, Minn). Central added two more runs in the fifth inning, but Beth Lloyd (So, Fond du Lac) sparked the Blue Devils with a three-run home run - her first collegiate home run - in the sixth inning. Stout had four hits in the inning. Central added a solo run in the bottom of the inning. Stout took an early 2-0 lead over nationally ranked Simpson when Jackie Juan (So, La Crosse) lifted a two-run shot over the fence in the first inning. Simpson (14-4) tied the score with single runs in the second and third innings, then broke the game open with a four-run fourth - aided by three Stout errors - and repeated the effort with four more runs in the sixth. Stout got RBIs from Juan and Nelly Peterson (Fr, Cumberland) in the sixth, but Simpson tacked on two more in the top of the seventh.
WOMEN'S TRACK OPENS OUTDOOR SEASON WITH 2ND PLACE FINISH AT WASH U ST. LOUIS, Mo. (March 24, 2006) - Nikki Sims (Jr, Becker, Minn) won two events and led a UW-Stout sweep in the triple jump as the Blue Devils opened their 2006 outdoor season with a second place finish at the Washington University Twilite Meet, Friday. Sims captured the top spot in the long jump, capturing the event with a jump of 16-feet, 7.25-inches. She took the triple jump with a leap of 33-10.25. Stout took the top four spots in the event. Erin Berg (Fr, Sheboygan) was second (32-9.75), Sam Strunk (Jr, Athens) was third (32-5) and Jackie Bruchez (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn) was fourth (32-4.25). Carrie Peterson (So, Luck) was first in the high jump (5-2.25) and Katee Rosburg (Fr, Superior) narrowly took the 1500-meter run, edging out Washington University's Kate Pentak by .34-seconds. Rosburg finsihed in a time of 4-minutes, 42.32-seconds.Bridgette Crozier (So, Winona, Minn) finished second (18:53.35) in the 5000-meter run, as was Abbey Ring (So, Manitowoc) in the steeplechase (12:27.92), Pam Sellberg (Fr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) in the pole vault (9-6) and Taylor Mayo (So, Iron River, Mich) in the high jump (4-9).Third place finishes went to Leah Karaliunas (Sr, Oconomowoc) in the 5000 (19:30.95), Rachel Richardson (So, Weyerhauser) in the steeplechase (13:04.60), Jasmine Patzner (So, Taylor) in the 100-hurdles (16.76), Amelia Treptow (Fr, Wells, Minn) in the pole vault (8-6) and Kelly Schachtner (Fr, Deer Park) in the shot put (38-9.50). NEITHER LEECH OR GONZENBACH ADVANCE AT NATIONALS NORTHFIELD, Minn. (March 10, 2006) - Neither Steven Leech (Fr, Lake Geneva) or Derek Gonzenbach (Jr, Milbank, SD) advanced out of the preliminaries rounds of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday. Leech placed ninth in the 55-hurdles in a time of 7.75 seconds, while Gonzenbach finished 11th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.00 seconds. Gonzenbach was a late entry, finding out only the day before that he would be running in the meet. Updated: March 27, 2006 |
