BLUE DEVILS TO MEET RANDOLPH-MACON IN SWEET SIXTEEN MENOMONIE (March 5, 2006) - The UW-Stout women's basketball team will be making their second consecutive trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III tournament. The Blue Devils will meet Randolph-Macon Friday, March 10 in Tacoma, Wash., on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University. The time is yet to be determined. The Blue Devils (22-7) defeated Simpson College, 78-68, Saturday in NCAA second round play. Stout's Molly Hendricks (Sr, Blaine, Minn) led the Blue Devils with 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville) also tossed in 19 points. Stout trounced Concordia-Moorhead, 61-37, in the first round. Stout is ranked 19th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and is receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Division III coaches poll. Stout won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular and tournament championship for the second consecutive year. Duoss leads Stout, and the WIAC, in scoring with 19.0 points, and is second in the WIAC in rebounds with 9.1. Duoss ranks third in NCAA Division III in field goal percentage (.637). Randolph-Macon (27-2) leads the NCAA Division III in scoring averaging 83.1 points. The Yellow Jackets are ranked seventh in both the D3hoops.com poll and in the USA Today/ESPN poll. Located in Ashland, Va., the Yellow Jackets disposed of Hood, 83-57, in the first round of the NCAA playoffs, then defeated Greensboro College, 75-61, in the second round. RMC repeated as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champion with a 19-1 record. Last season, the Yellow Jackets advanced to the NCAA Division III championship game where they were beaten by Millikin University, the same team to bounce Stout from the 2005 tournament. The Yellow Jackets are led by guard Megan Silva (Sr, Glen Allen, Va) with 23.0 points, ranking her third in NCAA Division III. Silva ranks 12th nationally in assists (6.1) and 18th in field goal percentage (.572). Michelle Orton (Sr, Silver Springs, Md) is averaging 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds. She ranks fifth nationally in field goal percentage (.615). Salem Shaffer (Jr, Glen Falls, NY) averages 10.1 points. Randolph-Macon has four players measuring 6-foot-2 or better - Michelle Orton (6-3); Colleen Orton (So, Silver Spring, Md) 6-5; Jannesa Morusma (So, Bronx, NY) 6-3; and Kristin Thompson (Sr, Penlyyn, Pa) 6-2. Stout has four players listed at 6-0 or more: Duoss (6-2); Jenny McDermid (Jr, Oconto Falls) 6-1; Dani Boese (Fr, Alma) 6-0; Alisha Doppenberg (Fr, Annandale, Minn) 6-0. BLUE DEVILS RETURN TO SWEET 16 WITH WIN OVER SIMPSONINDIANOLA, Iowa (March 4, 2006) - Molly Hendricks (Sr, Blaine, Minn) has been a clutch player but not as clutch as she was Saturday night in a 78-68 win over Simpson College in the NCAA Division III regional championships. Hendricks hit a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left in the game to push Stout up, 75-68, then recorded two steals and two free throws to seal the win. Hendricks was the story of the night as she finished the night with 19 points and 10 rebounds, just missing a triple double with nine assists. The win gives Stout a return trip to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Stout (22-7) will play Randolph-Macon, Va., (26-2), Friday, March 10 at a site to be announced Sunday. The Blue Devils dominated the first half of the game, running off to a 41-27 halftime lead as Hendricks and Joanna Bird (So, Boyceville) each scored eight first half points. But the Storm lived up to their name, storming back in the second half to take the lead, 60-59, on a Sarah Pearson jumper with eight minutes left in the game. The Storm built up a three point lead, but Lindsey Geissler (So, Thorp) cut the deficit to 62-61 with two free throws and Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville) put Stout up for good, 63-62, with two charity shots at 6:32. A bucket by Duoss and a 3-pointer by Hendricks put Stout up by six, but Simpson kept coming back on a jumper by Katelyn Whiton and two free throws by Tessa VanOosbree to pull to within 68-66. Duoss stretched the lead to four, but again two Simpson free throws, this time by Carlie Beals, brought Simpson back to within two, 70-68, with 1:38 remaining. Duoss worked her way free again to stretch the lead to four before Hendricks shifted into high gear. Duoss matched Hendricks with 19 points and Geissler finished with 11 points for Stout. The Blue Devils shot 52 percent in the first half and finished the game shooting 43 percent. Simpson got 13 points from Beals and Heather Kay and 12 points from Whiton. Simpson shot 50 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 38 percent. Stout held a 45-39 edge in rebounding. BLUE DEVILS WEAR DOWN CONCORDIA, WIN NCAA OPENERINDIANOLA, Iowa (March 3, 2006) - UW-Stout's full court pressure wore Concordia-Moorhead down and the Blue Devils went on to defeat the Cobbers, 61-37, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday. The Blue Devils (21-7) held Concordia (21-7) to their lowest point total of the season and held the Cobbers' leading scorer, Melanie Hageman, to only six points, 10 points under her season average. Stout's pressure caused the trouble all night as the Blue Devils numerous time forced Concordia to beat the shot clock or take a shot clock violation. While Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville), the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the year, didn't have an overpowering game on the scoreboard, finishing with a game-high 13 points, she was a defensive force, blocking six shots and pulling down seven rebounds. Stout's bench contributed immensely to the win, scoring 29 points. Joanna Bird (So, Boyceville) led the bench players with 11 points, going 3-of-3 from 3-point range. Savanah Oeltjen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) and Duoss keyed a strong first half that saw Stout jump to as much as a 12 point lead. Oeltjen scored six first half points, four coming early, including the shot that pushed Stout ahead for good, 9-8, with eight minutes off the clock. Oeltjen's bucket started a 15-2 run and the Cobbers only briefly got the score under 10 a couple of times during the rest of the game, the last time coming at the 14:42 mark of the second half when Emily Swierenga drained a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 36-27. But Bird answered that seconds later with a 3-pointer of her own and Stout ran off on a 12-4 run and the Blue Devils were moving on to the regional finals. Oeltjen finished the night with eight points. Jenny McDermid (Jr, Oconto Falls) contributed nine points. Stout shot 50.4 percent in the first half and finished shooting 45.1 percent (23-of-51) for the game, including dropping in 6-of-15 3-pointers. Concordia never really got their game in gear, shooting only 29.8 percent for the game (14-of-47). Jenna Freudenberg was the Concordia's only player in double figures, finishing with 11. Stout held an advantage off the glass, pulling down 37 to 29 for Concordia. DUOSS WIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR, THOMAS COACH OF THE YEARMENOMONIE (March 2, 2006) - UW-Stout's Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville/Clinton) was named the 2005-06 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) player of the year and Blue Devil coach Mark Thomas was named co-coach of the year. Also named to the All-WIAC team was guard Molly Hendricks (Sr, Blaine, Minn). Both Duoss and Hendricks were named to the all-defensive squad. Duoss, a post player, leads the WIAC in scoring with 19.3 points and is second in the league in rebounding (9.4), blocked shots (2.1) and field goal percentage (63.7 percent). Duoss has scored in double figures in 25 of the 26 games she has played in and hit a double-double 12 times this season. Now a two-time All-WIAC first team selection, Duoss has tallied 501 points this season and is edging towards the Stout single season record of 575 points. In her two year career at Stout, Duoss has racked up 905 points, currently 12th on the all-time scoring list. Duoss has 63 blocked shots this year and holds the school career record with 160. Thomas garnered his fifth conference coach of the year, but is the first to win the award in back-to-back seasons. Thomas turned around a season that seemed to be going nowhere in December. Starting the season at 7-5, Thomas found a spark in his squad the propelled them to a 13-2 finish in January and February and their second consecutive WIAC title. The Blue Devils (20-7) defended their regular season title by winning the WIAC tournament for the second consecutive year and advancing to the NCAA Division III playoffs where Stout will face Concordia-Moorhead, Friday, March 3 at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Thomas shares the coach of the year award with Lois Hereen of UW-La Crosse. Thomas was the coach of the year in 1993, 1997, 2002, and 2005. Hendricks makes her first appearance on the all-conference team, but she is a familiar face around the league. Hendricks has not missed a game as a Blue Devils, playing in a school record 112 consecutive games. Hendricks leads the team in assists (100) and tied the school record earlier in the season with an 11-assist game. Hendricks has been the Blue Devils' clutch player through much of her career, and can be counted on for the key basket or rebound. Hendricks is the team's second leading scorer (8.6) and leads the team in steals with 63.
BLUE DEVILS' OUTSTANDING SEASON COMES TO AN END ROCK ISLAND, Ill (March 4, 2006) - It was a horse apiece as UW-Stout and Augustana College split two games this season, but Augustana wound up with a bigger horse as the Vikings defeated UW-Stout, 77-70, in an NCAA Division III regional championship game, Saturday. The two teams played in the championship game of the UW-Stout/Wendy's Holiday Tournament in December with the Blue Devils taking the crown at Johnson Fieldhouse. Home court advantage came into play as the Vikings overtook the Blue Devils with a big push early in the second half. The Vikings (23-5) went off on an 11-3 run to jump out to a 42-34 lead five minutes into the second half, then jumped out to as much as a 12 point, 48-36 lead three minutes later. But it was Stout's turn to respond as the Blue Devils (22-7) went off on a 12-0 run to knot the score at 48 all, with four players contributing to the run. Greg Chaisson (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) had four points, Adam Chandler (So, Burnsville, Minn) and Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley) each hit a 3-pointer and Jacob Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont) had a single bucket. The teams played around with a couple of ties and two-to-three point Augustana leads before the Vikings nailed back-to-back 3-pointer to jump out to a seven point, 59-52 lead with 8:35 left. Stout would get as close as four points, 68-64, with 3:26 left, but Augustana's Nate Swetalla answered back with a 3-pointer and Augustana went on to make six consecutive free throws to finish the game. Augustana's Rick Harrigan led all scorers with 24 points. Dain Swetalla scored 12 points and James McAdams-Thornton and Pat Brusveen each scored 11 points. All five of Stout's starters scored in double digits. Nonemacher led Stout with 16 points. Stangl had 15 points and Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha) 12. Chaisson and Chandler each finished with 10 points. Both teams shot well for the game, with each shooting 53 percent, but the Vikings shot a sizzling 71 percent in the second half. DEFENSE AT THE END GIVE BLUE DEVILS FIRST EVER NCAA WINROCK ISLAND, Ill (March 3, 2006) - When push came to shove, the game came down to the final seconds and UW-Stout came up with the defensive effort to take a 66-64 win over Carleton College in the NCAA Division III opener Friday. Stout (22-6) never trailed in the second half, but Carleton (21-7) launched a barrage of 3-point shots that definitely kept the Knights in the game. It was a 3-pointer by Carleton's Dan Forkrud with 54 seconds left that pulled his team to within one point, 65-64. Carleton fouled Adam Chandler (So, Burnsville, Minn), who missed the back end of two free throws, giving the long range Knights hope with 15 seconds remaining. But a Jacob Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont) rejection of a down low jumper by Tommy Drake and a turnover with two seconds left sent Stout into their first ever NCAA regional final game. The Blue Devils will play the winner of the Augustana/Buena Vista game, Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The game was tight throughout, and it was the Knights' perimeter game that kept it that way as they bombed their way to five first half 3-pointers and eight second half treys. Stout took a 34-32 lead, a lead they would not surrender, on a 3-pointer by Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley) just before the halftime buzzer. Stout kept Carleton scoreless over the first three minutes of the second half and built a 40-32 lead before the Knights came back. The game took on a pattern. Stout would jump out to a lead, Carleton would come back. It wasn't until Stout had possession of the final ball could the Blue Devils breath easy. Nonemacher had a monster night off the glass, grabbing 19 rebounds - 11 defensive boards - and scoring 14 points. Chandler finished with 17 points and Stangl and Greg Chaisson (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) each contributed 12 points. Carleton, which shot hit 13-of-25 3-pointers, were led by Forkrud with 18 points, including four treys. Tommy Drake had 17 points with two bombs and 12 rebounds and Jake Phillips contributed 15 points, scoring all of his points from beyond the arc, nailing five. Stout carried an advantage at the free throw line, popping in 14-of-21 charity shots. Carleton made 5-of-9. The 22 wins by Stout matches a school record for most wins in a single season. The 1968-69 squad finished up at 22-4. FARMER, NONEMACHER FIRST TEAM ALL-WIAC SELECTIONSMENOMONIE (March 2, 2006) - UW-Stout's Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha/St. Joseph) and Jacob Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont/Flathead) were named to the 2005-06 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) first team. Guards Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley) and Adam Chandler (So, Burnsville, Minn) received honorable mention honors. Farmer has been a quiet leader for the Blue Devils throughout his career. Working primarily in the paint, Farmer is averaging 11.7 points and 5.9 rebounds. Over the WIAC tournament, Farmer has produced three games where he finished with double-doubles. Throughout the season, Farmer has scored in double digits 19 times. Nonemacher has simply blossomed this season. Over the first 11 games of the season, Nonemacher averaged 8.5 points and 6.1 rebounds. In the last 16 games, Nonemacher is averaging 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. On the season, he is averaging 12 points and 7.4 rebounds. Nonemacher, at 7-foot tall, ranks fourth in the NCAA Division III in blocked shots (3.7) and is second in the WIAC in blocked shots. He is also second in the league in field goal percentage (58.3), and third in rebounds (7.4). Nonemacher has blocked six or more shots in nine games this season and twice has blocked eight shots in a single game. This marks the first time since the 1979-80 season that Stout has placed two players on the All-WIAC first team in the same season. Stangl is the team's leading scorer with 13.2 points. Chandler is averaging 10.6 points and has dished off 98 assists.

Kautz, a defenseman, is a repeat member to the first team, while Stearns, a forward, and Stone, a goalie, were honorable mention picks last year.
