BLUE DEVIL WOMEN ADVANCE TO THE BIG DANCE IN IOWA

MENOMONIE (February 27, 2006) - The UW-Stout women's basketball team will be making their eighth appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament and will travel to Indianola, Iowa, where they will face Concordia-Moorhead, in a first round game, Friday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m.

The winner of that game will face the winner of the host Simpson College (23-4) and St. Benedict (21-5), Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m.

The Blue Devils (20-7) repeated as Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champions and successfully defended their WIAC tournament title with an 84-70 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday. Stout last season advanced to the Sweet 16 where they were knocked out by eventual national champion Millikin University.

The Cobbers (21-6) earned their 15th bid to the NCAA tournament and, like Stout, earned their conference's automatic qualifier by winning their conference tournament. The Cobbers defeated Carleton College, 65-56, in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) tournament title game Saturday.

BLUE DEVILS REPEAT AS WIAC CHAMPS WITH WIN OVER POINTERS

MENOMONIE (February 25, 2006) - Molly Hendricks (Sr, Blaine, Minn) scored 15 points in the first half to lift UW-Stout to a 44-32 halftime lead and the Blue Devils went on to win their second consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament title, downing UW-Stevens Point, 84-70, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Stout earns the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III tournament next week. Pairings and sites will be announced the morning of Monday, Feb. 27.

Hendricks wasted little time letting the Pointers (20-8) know she was around. After Dani Boese (Fr, Alma) gave Stout (20-7) a 2-0 lead a minute into the game, Hendricks banged home her first of three first half 3-pointers.

A steady attack built the lead to 16-10 when Stout went on a 6-0 run, with a free throw and a bucket by Savanah Oeltjen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) and another 3-pointer by Hendricks stretched the lead to 22-10. The Pointers got the score to 22-15 on a 3-pointer by Cassandra Schultz and two free throws by Haley Houghton. The game stayed within seven points for much of the next six minutes went off on a 14-7 run to close out the half.

Hendricks signaled the start of Stout's move in the second period, draining another 3-pointer at the 16:58 mark to put Stout up 49-36.

Jenny McDermid (Jr, Oconto Falls) went to work for the Blue Devils after she picked up her fourth foul of the game only seconds after Hendricks' 3-ball.

Over the course of the next four minutes, playing for Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville), who was in foul trouble, McDermid scored six points and finished the half with eight points. She ended the game with 10 points.

The Pointers were never out of this game, even thought they trailed by as much as 16 points. The Pointers' Schultz began to carry Stevens Point on her back, scored 15 points in the final 15 minutes of play. But the Pointers would get no closer than 10 points in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Both teams had four players in double digits, two starters and two bench players apiece.

The Pointers' Schultz took scoring honors with 20 points. Nathalie Lechault had 11 points, four blocked shots and nine rebounds, while Jesirae Heuer came off the bench for 12 points and Houghton came off the pines for 11 points.

Duoss led Stout with 19 points and Hendricks finished with 18 for starters. Joanna Bird (So, Boyceville) scored 10 points off the bench, including a big 3-pointer late in the game that basically took Stevens Point out of comeback mode. McDermid backed up Duoss with 10 points.

Stout shot 41 percent, and the Pointers shot 37 percent. Stevens Point held a slight rebound advantage, 40-39.

LATE RUN ASSURES BLUE DEVILS WIN OVER LA CROSSE

MENOMONIE (February 22, 2006) - A 15-0 spurt midway through the second half lifted UW-Stout to a 75-59 win over UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) semi-final tournament game, Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The top seeded Blue Devils (19-7) will host UW-Stevens Point, which defeated UW-Oshkosh, 58-58, Saturday, Feb. 25, in the WIAC championship game.

The two teams proved to be fairly evenly matched throughout most of the game, although Stout led for the majority of the game, usually around five to six points. Stout held a 35-24 halftime, mostly on the strength of Kelsey Duoss's (Jr, Janesville) 11 first half points.

The Eagles (19-8) came at Stout a couple of times in the second half, cutting the lead down to five points with a mini 4-0 run. The Eagles got as close as 48-43 with 11:04 left in the game when Stout took off.

Duoss scored five points in the 13-0 run, Lindsey Geissler (So, Thorp) and Steffanie Nemitz (Sr, Bloomington) each scored four points and Savanah Oeltjen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) had a bucket, most of the points coming in the paint, for a 63-45 lead at the 4:57 mark.

Stout scored two more baskets from the floor and dropped in eight free throws to close out the game to clinch a return to the WIAC championship game.

Stout shot a steady 48 percent throughout the game, connecting on 27-of-56 shots. The Eagles were held to 34 percent, hitting 21-of-61 from the floor. Both teams had opportunities at the line. Stout connected on 19-of-25 free throws, the Eagles 14-of-24.

Duoss scored 21 points to lead Stout. The Eagles' Mackenzie Hunter matched Duoss with 21 points. Geissler finished with 12 points and Nemitz, who came off the bench, had 11. La Crosse's Abby Johnson scored 12 points.

The win stretched Stout's winning streak over the Eagles to 23 games.

BLUE DEVIL WOMEN SURVIVE QUARTERFINAL CONTEST

MENOMONIE (February 20, 2006) - If UW-Stout had been a part of the popular reality show, "Survivor", the Blue Devils would have been voted off the island. But the Blue Devils did survive Monday night at Johnson Fieldhouse to play another day, holding on to defeat eighth seeded UW-Whitewater, 80-76, in the quarterfinals of the WIAC playoffs.

The Blue Devils (18-7) went into a lull after intermission. Holding the Warhawks (18-7) to one more point than turnovers in the first half (20 points, 19 Whitewater turnovers), Stout, the No. 1 seed, allowed Whitewater back from a more than 20 point deficit.

With Stout seemingly unable to make a basket in the final six minutes, Whitewater seemed to not miss down the stretch and pulled to within two points, 72-70, with a minute remaining.

Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville) hit a jumper on a dish from Lindsey Geissler (So, Thorp) to put Stout up by four, 74-70. But Whitewater's Trisha Thill pulled the Warhawks back to within two, 74-72, with 23 seconds left. The Warhawks were forced to foul, and Stout made six charity shots in the final 20 seconds.

With Whitewater committing the turnovers in the first half, Stout eased out to a 41-20 halftime lead, on the strength of 54 percent shooting, as Duoss scored 13 in the first half and Molly Hendricks (Sr, Blaine, Minn) added 10.

But the Warhawks caught fire in the second half, shooting 56 percent and outscoring Stout, 56-39, in the stanza.

Turnovers and fouls were plentiful for both teams. Stout committed 27 turnovers and Whitewater, 31. The Warhawks racked up 27 personal fouls, Stout 22.

Duoss finished the night with a game-high 29 points, but was limited to only five rebounds. Geissler scored 17 points and Hendricks 15.

The Warhawks got 18 points from Mary Donohoo, 16 from Thill and 10 from Amy Morris.

BLUE DEVIL MEN'S BASKETBALL TO MAKE FIRST NCAA APPEARANCE

MENOMONIE (February 27, 2006) - UW-Stout will make its first-ever NCAA Division III tournament appearance when they travel to Rock Island, Ill, Friday, to face Carleton College. The time has tentatively set for 6 p.m.

The winner of that contest will face the winner of host Augustana College (21-5) and Buena Vista (15-13).

The Blue Devils (21-6) finished second in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and second in the WIAC tournament and were ranked 14th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

The Carleton Knights (21-6) are also making their first trip to the NCAA tournament after finishing as runner-up in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) tournament.

WHITEWATER HANDLES STOUT FROM BEGINNING TO END

WHITEWATER (February 25, 2006) - UW-Whitewater controlled the tempo, the intensity and, most importantly, the scoreboard as the Warhawks defeated UW-Stout, 78-60, in the Wisconsin intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship game Saturday at Kachel Gym.

The Warhawks (22-5), the No. 1 seed and regular season champion, earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The Blue Devils (21-6), the No. 2 seed and the regular season runner-up, will have to wait until late Sunday night to see if 21 wins is enough to earn a bid to the tournament.

Whitewater shot out to a 9-0 lead, before Stout got their first bucket four minutes into the game, a jumper by Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley). The Warhawks only added to the lead througout, building as much as an 18 point lead three minutes before the half and held a 45-32 halftime lead.

Jeremy Manchester was the big difference in the half. Fresh off the game-winning shot in the semi-finals Thursday over UW-La Crosse, Manchester poured in 20 first half points, dropping in 6-of-7 from the floor, including three treys. He also made 5-of-6 free throws.

The Whitewater lead grew to as much as 25 points with two minutes left in the game.

Manchester finished the night with 27 points. Anthony Mlachnik added 13 for the Warhawks and Rob Perry had 12 points.

Stout got 20 points from Stangl, who scored 13 points in the second half. Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha) collected his third double-double in a row, scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warhawks held a big advantage at the free throw line, making 19-of-24 opportunities, while Stout made 8-of-15 charity shots.

STOUT DEFEATS STEVENS POINT TO ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

MENOMONIE (February 23, 2006) - Adam Chandler (So, Burnville, Minn) cooled down considerably shooting-wise in the second half, but still hit the clutch shot, a 3-pointer with 1:32 left in the game to hold off another UW-Stevens Point comeback as UW-Stout went on to a 78-70 win, Thursday, Feb. 23 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils advance to the Wisconsin intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship game Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks won 72-70 on a last second shot.

Just like the last time the two teams played when Stevens Point came back from an 18 point deficit to defeat Stout, the Pointers were climbing uphill all night. They had fallen into an early hole, and Stout built a 16-0 lead before Stevens Point scored their first point with 10:18 left in the first half.

Stout built a 33-20 halftime lead - and held as much as a 19 point first half lead - as Chandler and fellow guard Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley) each scored nine first half points.

The Pointers came at Stout hard late in the first half, cutting the lead down to 10 points, 30-20, with 34 second left in the half, but Chandler buried a deep 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

It would be the Pointers turn to move in the second. Powered by 11 points by freshman Pete Rortvedt during a 17-6 run over the first four minutes of the second half, the Pointers cut the lead down to four, 41-37. Stevens Point kept coming and took the lead, 54-53, with 6:32 remaining on a 3-pointer by Steve Hicklin.

The lead either changed hands or was tied nine times over the next three minutes until Stout's Greg Chaisson (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) drilled a pair of free throws to put Stout up 62-61, with 3:24 remaining. Neither team scored for next two minutes until Chandler buried the 3-pointer.

Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha) got a wide-open dunk after Brian Buck (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) pulled down a missed Pointer shot and Stout went on to make 11-of-12 free throws in the final 52 seconds, seven by Stangl.

Stout advances to the WIAC Championship game for the first time since 1999 and the loss snapped a Stevens Point 18-game post season winning streak, the longest in NCAA Division III history.

Chandler, who was 3-for-5 from the floor and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc in the first half, finished the game hitting 4-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-8 from 3-point range to score 12 points.

The Pointers' Steve Hicklin led all scorers with 18 points, 14 in the second half. Rortvedt finished with 14 points, 13 in the second half, Jon Krull scored 15 points, 13 in the second half, and Brian Bauer scored 11 points, eight in the second half.

Farmer led Stout with 17 points and 10 rebounds, collecting his second consecutive double-double. Stangl finished with 16 points and Jacob Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont) had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots. Chaisson scored five points, but recorded 10 assists. Stout outrebounded the Pointers, 35-28.

STANGL LIGHTS FIRE UNDER BLUE DEVILS, DOWN FALCONS

MENOMONIE (February 21, 2006) - Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley) produced just the boost UW-Stout needed in the second half, complementing a steady performance by Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha), as the Blue Devils defeated UW-River Falls, 75-65, in the quarterfinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament Tuesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

With the Blue Devils (20-5) putting up a lackluster first half, Stout, the tournament's No. 2 seed, trailed the No. 7 seeded Falcons (6-19), 37-29 at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Stangl with four minutes gone in the second half put Stout ahead, 42-41, for the first time since leading 18-17 at the 7:28 mark of the first half. A three-point play by Brian Buck (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) and a jumper just inside the arc by Stangl gave Stout a 47-41 lead.

Stangl drained another 3-pointer, but the Falcons were not finished. Eric Kossoris hit a 3-pointer, Ryan Zylstra a jumper and Mark James a 3-pointer the Falcons up by two, 50-52 with 8:32 left.

Farmer, who would lead all scorers with 20 points, knotted the game at 52, and Zylstra put the Falcons ahead with a single free throw.

Stangl, who would score 15 second half points, sandwiched five points around an Adam Chandler (So, Burnsville, Minn) 3-pointer before the Falcons chipped back, eventually cutting the deficit to a 62-60 Stout lead. Greg Chaisson (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) put Stout up 65-60 on a 3-pointer, but Hans Hoeg cut into the lead, 65-63, with a three point play. Farmer pushed the lead back out to four. John Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont) powered to the basket for a dunk to give Stout a 69-63 lead with two minutes remaining in the contest.

River Falls got their final points on two free throws by Hoeg and Stout developed a cushion from the free throw line, making six consecutive free throws to close out the game.

The Falcons controlled the game early, shooting 63 percent in the first half, holding as much as an 11 point with 1:45 left in the first half. Hoeg sparked the Falcons with 10 first half point, including two 3-pointers. The Falcons drained 5-of-8 3-point shots in the first half.

As effective as the Falcons shot in the first half, they shot poorly in the second half, hitting only 27 percent and finished the game at 43 percent. Stout shot a steady 48 percent throughout the game.

Farmer led all scorers with 20 points and completed the double-double with 10 rebounds. Stangl finished with 17 points and Jacob Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont) tossed in 10 points.

Hoeg led the Falcons with 18 points. Ryan Zylstra finished with 14 points and Eric Kossoris, 13.

The 20 wins by Stout this season is the first 20-win season since the 1968-69 season.

JACOB NONEMACHER NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MENOMONIE (February 22, 2006) - After suffering a slight injury in the first half, Jacob Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispell, Mont/Flathead) came back to score 11 points in the second half helping Stout to a 71-68 comeback win over UW-La Crosse, Feb. 18 in La Crosse. Nonemacher was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's basketball player of the week for the second time this season.
