WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (11-6, 6-3) finish off a three game road trip this week by traveling to nearby UW-Eau Claire (9-9, 4-5), Wednesday, Jan. 25 and to UW-Whitewater (9-8, 3-5), Saturday, Jan. 28. Stout is currently tied for second in the WIAC with UW-Stevens Point. Stout defeated the Blugolds, 82-62, in November to open conference play and swept past the Warhawks, 77-55, Jan. 14. Both games can be heard on WMEQ radio. Last week: The Blue Devils put the defensive pressure on in the second half and went on to defeat UW-Platteville, 61-52, Jan. 21. Player of the week: Kelsey Duoss, Jr, Janesville, Wis. (Clinton)

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (13-4, 6-3) will host arch-rival UW-Eau Claire (9-8, 2-7), Wednesday, Jan. 25 and will be at UW-Whitewater (11-4, 6-2), Saturday, Jan. 28. Stout is currently tied with UW-La Crosse for fourth in the WIAC. The Blue Devils crushed Eau Claire, 72-35, to open the conference season on Nov. 30. It was just a bit more than a week ago that Stout edged past Whitewater, 78-73, at Johnson Fieldhouse, Jan. 14. The Eau Claire game is available on the internet by Blue Devil radio. The Whitewater game is available on WMEQ radio. Last week: The Blue Devils needed overtime but went on to outlast UW-Platteville, 78-73, Jan. 21 at Platteville. Player of the week: Ryan Stangl, So, Spring Valley, Wis.

HOCKEY
The Blue Devils (12-7-0, 5-3-0 NCHA, 4-1-0 WIAC) slipped out of first place last weekend, but will continue their quest for an elusive conference title when they host Lake Forest College (9-10-0, 3-5-0), Friday, Jan. 27, and NCHA front-runner, St. Norbert College (15-2-2, 5-1-2), Saturday, Jan. 28. Stout is currently in third place in the NCHA. The Blue Devils slipped past Lake Forest, 4-3, Dec. 3, but were blanked by St. Norbert, 4-0, the night before. The games will be broadcast by Lake Forest radio and the St. Norbert game will be broadcast by Relevant Radio Last week: The Blue Devils lost, 4-2, to UW-Stevens Point, Jan. 20 and defeated UW-Eau Claire, 5-3, Jan. 21. Player of the week: Matt Mlynarczyck, Jr, Oakdale, Minn.

GYMNASTICS
The Blue Devils will will host Gustavus Adolphus, Monday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m., then are off until Feb. 3. Last week: The Blue Devils lost, 175.625-163.525, to UW-La Crosse, Jan. 20. Player of the week: Rhian Paulson, Sr, Stillwater, Minn.

The Blue Devils will open the 2006 season Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host the UW-Stout Open at noon in the multi-purpose room.

BLUE DEVILS APPLY DEFENSIVE PRESSURE, GET ROAD WIN

PLATTEVILLE (January 21, 2006) - After trailing for much of the first half and a good deal of the second half, UW-Stout upped the defensive pressure and controlled the tempo of the game and went on to down UW-Platteville, 61-52, Saturday at Williams Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (11-6, 6-3) trailed 28-25 at halftime, but cut the lead and went up as much as six points at the 14 minute mark of the second stanza. The Pioneers (8-9, 4-5) mounted their own comeback, tying the game, then taking a one point, 50-49, lead with six minutes left in the game. Stout worked their way back to a four point lead from the free throw line and Savanah Oeltjen (Jr, Spring Valley, Minn) put the Blue Devils out in front by six, 58-52, with a minute left. Stout iced the game with three free throws.

Stout's Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville) scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead all players. Birthday girl Lindsey Geissler (So, Thorp) knocked down 11 points. Oeltjen finished with nine points.

Holly Kaiser scored 12 points for Platteville, which shot only 31 percent from the field, while Rachel Korth and Liz Tesch each added 11.

Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 25 and will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 28.

BLUE DEVILS OUTLAST PIONEERS IN OVERTIME

PLATTEVILLE (January 21, 2006) - UW-Stout outlasted UW-Platteville 78-73 in overtime, the third time in the Blue Devils' last four trips to Williams Fieldhouse that the game has required extra time.

The Blue Devils scored 10 of their 13 overtime points from the free throw line, including one by Greg Chaisson (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) that proved to be the tiebreaker with 54 seconds left. Chaisson's free throw made the count 72-71.

Terry Farmer made one of two, and Adam Chandler (So, Burnsville, Minn) hit both of his shots for a 75-71 lead. The Pioneers' Mike Jamerson hit a pullup jumper with 18 seconds remaining, slicing the deficit to 75-73, but Ryan Stangl (So, Spring Valley) made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining, and Chandler made one of two with six ticks left to salt the game away.

UW-Stout, ranked 21st in the D3hoops.com poll, improved to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers fell to 9-8, 4-5.

The Blue Devils, who shot 67 percent in the second half to overcome a 34-22 halftime deficit, placed five players in double figures. Stangl made all five of his three-point attempts and finished with a game-high 21 points. Stangl's final three-point gave Stout a 65-63 lead with 1:04 remaining.

The Pioneers' LeVon Crawford scored 22 points, including the game-tying basket with 52 seconds remaining in regulation. Jeff Skemp added 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jamerson and Sean Krause each scored 11.

MLYNARCZYK SCORES TWO GOALS IN FINAL FIVE MINUTES FOR WIN

EAU CLAIRE (January 21, 2006) - Matt Mlynarczyk (Jr, Oakdale, Minn) scored on the power play with five minutes remaining in the game to break a 3-3 tie, then scored an empty net goal with 52 seconds remaining to give UW-Stout a 5-3 win over UW-Eau Claire, Saturday at Hobbs Ice Arena.

The Blugolds (2-14-3, 0-7-1) opened the scoring in this contest with a goal by Brent Lockwood only two minutes into the game. The Blue Devils' Mike Elm (Jr, Falcons Heights, Minn) equalized the score with six minutes left in the first period.

Just over a minute later, Jack Wolgemuth (Fr, Anchorage, Alaska) scored. Seven minutes into the second period, Wolgemuth scored on the power play to give Stout (12-7-0, 5-3-0) a 3-1 lead.

The Blugolds tied the score in the second, coming closer with a Chip Dunleavy power play goal, then tied the score with four minutes remaining in the period on a Mike Braker score.

Justin Huth (Sr, Shakopee, Minn) had three assists for the 15th ranked Blue Devils, while Andrew Stearns (Jr, Wadena, Minn) had two assists. Mike Stone (So, West St. Paul, Minn) had 32 saves for Stout and Steffan Braunlich had 23.

Stout will host Lake Forest College Friday, Jan. 27 and St. Norbert College, Saturday, Jan. 28. Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m.

POINTERS DOUBLE UP BLUE DEVILS, END STOUT STREAK

MENOMONIE (January 20, 2006) - UW-Stevens Point scored four consecutive goals in the second period and went on to end UW-Stout's four game winning streak and knock the Blue Devils out of first place in the NCHA with a 4-2 win, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Blue Devils (11-7-0, 4-3-0 NCHA) actually got on the board first when Mike Kautz (Sr, Des Plaines, Ill) scored only six seconds into the second period off the opening faceoff, picking up a rebound after his initial shot.

It was all Pointers (10-6-2, 4-3-0) after that. Only 30 seconds later, Rolf Ulvin scored and Matt Stendahl added a short handed goal about 45 seconds later, giving the Pointers a 2-1 lead.

Sean Fish scored midway through the period to push Stevens Point's lead to 3-1 and Ulvin scored his second goal of the period, a power play goal with three minutes remaining in the stanza.

Stout cut the score in half midway through the third period on an unassisted goal by Jeff DeFrancesca (Jr, Mt. Prospect, Ill).

The Pointers outshot Stout, 37-28, with Stout's Matt Koenig (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) making 33 saves and the Pointers' Marcus Paulson, 26.

RHIAN PAULSON SCORES A FIRST ON THE FLOOR EXERCISE

MENOMONIE (January 20, 2006) - Rhian Paulson (Sr, Stillwater, Minn) picked up UW-Stout's only first place finishes as the Blue Devils fell to defending national champion UW-La Crosse, 175.625-163.525, Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Paulson scored a 9.050 on the floor and also topped the field in the all-around, scoring a 35.65. She was fourth on the vault (9.125), uneven bars (8.775) and balance beam (8.70).

Ashley Timm (So, Eden Prairie, Minn) was second in the all-around, placing third on balance beam (8.90) and sixth on the floor (8.65).

Shanna Kissinger (Sr, Sioux City, Iowa) was sixth on the bars (8.20) and Kori Zieminski (Fr, Cottage Grove, Minn) was sixth on the beam (7.95).

Stout will host Gustavus Adolphus College, Monday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
