WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils, who were ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com poll and picked to repeat as WIAC champions in a WIAC preseason poll, will open the 2005-06 campaign, Friday, Nov. 18 when they play at NCAA Division II Minnesota State, Mankato. They will then play their second Division II opponent, Saturday, Nov. 19 when they face St. Cloud State. The Blue Devils will be at Northwestern College, Tuesday, Nov. 22. Last week: Kelsey Duoss, a preseason All-American, scored a double-double (18 pts, 12 rbs) in an 80-58 exhibition loss to NCAA Division I Marquette University, Nov. 13.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils, who have received votes in D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and were picked to finish fourth in a WIAC preseason poll, will open the season, Friday, Nov. 18 by traveling to the Wooster, Ohio, Tournament where they will face St. Thomas. Stout will face either Kalamazoo University or Wooster Saturday, Nov. 19. The Blue Devils will be at Macalester College, Monday, Nov. 21. Last week: The Blue Devils held their own against NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, falling 69-56 to the Phoenix, on Nov. 9.

HOCKEY
The Blue Devils (3-3-0, 0-0-0 NCHA, 0-0-0 WIAC) will wrap up a four-game homestand and open both the NCHA and WIAC seasons this Friday, Nov. 18 when they host arch-rival UW-Eau Claire (0-3-2, 0-0-0, 0-0-0). Stout will travel to UW-Stevens Point (3-2-0, 0-0-0, 0-0-0) Saturday, Nov. 19. Last week: Stout lost, 6-3, to Augsburg College, Nov. 11, then bounced back to down No. 7 ranked St. John's, 2-1, Nov. 12. Player of the week: Matt Koenig, Fr, Lakeland, Minn. (Stillwater)

FOOTBALL
The Blue Devils (6-4, 3-4 WIAC) closed out the season with a 38-26 loss at UW-Stevens Point. Offensive player of the week: Jesse Wendt, Jr, New Auburn, Wis. (Chetek).; Defensive player of the week: Arik Gunderson, Sr, Osseo, Wis. (Osseo-Fairchild)

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Blue Devil women finished the season with an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals in Peoria, Ill. Krista Jahimiak placed 33rd and earned all-region honors.

DUOSS GETS DOUBLE-DOUBLE, STOUT FALLS TO DI MARQUETTE

MILWAUKEE (November 13, 2005) - UW-Stout forward Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville) scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, but the Blue Devils came up short in their exhbition contest at Marquette University, 80-58, Sunday at the Al McGuire Center.

Duoss was perfect from the floor, hitting all nine of her field goal attempts. She did not go to the free throw line. She had three offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds. Duoss also blocked two shots.

Molly Hendricks (Sr, Blaine, Minn) finished with 13 points and Lindsey Geissler (So, Thorp) had 11 points.

"We played well against them," coach Mark Thomas said. "Obviously, the competition was very good. There are five teams in the Big East in the top 25 (nationally). We were up against a good team." The Golden Eagles got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Christina Quaye and 12 points from Svetlana Kovalenko.

"This was a great experience for us," Thomas said. "There are a lot of positive things that happened. We had some things exposed that we can work on and have a good measuring stick."

Stout will open the season Friday, Nov. 18 by traveling to Minnesota State, Mankato.

DUOSS EARNS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS; STOUT RANKED

MENOMONIE (November 10, 2005) - UW-Stout forward Kelsey Duoss (Jr, Janesville/Clinton) was named to the second team of the D3hoops.com preseason All-American Team.

Duoss, a first team all-WIAC and second team all-region selection last season, helped to lead the Blue Devils to a best-ever 24-7 overall record, WIAC title and to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16. Duoss was the team's leading scorer, averaging 13 points and set a school record for blocked shots with 97 (3.13 per game).

Duoss led the WIAC in shooting percentage (.545), averaged 7.5 rebounds per game and was named to the WIAC all-defensive squad.

The Blue Devils as a team are also reaping preseason accolades. Stout has been picked in a WIAC preseason poll to repeat as conference champions and was ranked sixth in the D3hoops.com Top 25 preseason poll and was ranked seventh in the USA Today/ESPN Division III top 25 Coaches poll.

BLUE DEVIL BASKETBALL TO HOST ANNUAL TIP-OFF BASH

MENOMONIE (November 8, 2005) - The UW-Stout men’s and women’s basketball teams will be hosting the annual Blue Devil Basketball Bash - The Biggest Basketball Party of the Year - Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 pm in Johnson Fieldhouse. Admission to the event is free.

There will be many prizes given away as well as a chance for a UW-Stout student to make a half court shot for a free semester of tuition. There will be contests for people of all ages.

Both the men's and women's teams will play a ten-minute intrasquad scrimmage, giving fans an opportunity to get a sneak peak at this year’s teams and also a chance to meet the players.

The Blue Devils open their season Friday, Nov. 18 on the road. Their first home game is Sunday, Nov. 27 with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men scheduled to begin a 3 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS HANG AROUND WITH DIVISION I GREEN BAY

GREEN BAY (November 9, 2005) - Like a pesky kid brother, UW-Stout, while never leading in the game with NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay, hung around until the end of the exhibition contest before falling 69-56.

Several times throughout the evening, the Blue Devils pulled to within a couple of points and had a chanced to take a lead midway throught the first period. Pulling to with 14-13 on a Jake Nonemacher (Jr, Kalispel, Mont) free throw before the Phoenix pulled out to an 11-point, 33-22 halftime lead.

The diminutive Jason Clopton (Jr, Golden Valley, Minn) came off the bench to score eight first half points and finished tied with three other Blue Devils with a team-high 11 points.

The Phoenix kept the Blue Devils at a half arm length in the second half as Stout pulled to within four points five minutes into the second half, 38-34, on a layup by Nate Severson (Jr, Eau Claire). Green Bay finally pulled away for good with about nine minutes left in the game and only twice dipped under a 10 point lead.

Terry Farmer (Sr, Kenosha) and Brian Buck (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) matched Clopton's 11 points.

The Phoenix got a game-high 21 points from Ryan Evanochko and 17 points from Ryan Tillema.

Stout will open the 2005-06 season for real Friday, Nov. 18 when they travel to the Wooster Tournament where they will open with St. Thomas.

BLUE DEVILS KNOCK OFF NO. 7 ST. JOHN'S

MENOMONIE (November 12, 2005) - No sweat that St. John's came into the Dunn County Ice Arena ranked seventh in the country. No sweat that the Johnnies are laden with hockey tradition. No sweat the Johnnies' head coach was a member of the 1980s Olympic hockey team that carried gold out of Lake Placid. No sweat that UW-Stout was carrying a three game losing streak, and were coming off a lackluster performance the night before as the Blue Devils downed St. John's, 2-1, Saturday in front of about 500 fans.

Stout goalie Matt Koenig (Fr, Lakeland, Minn) recorded 31 saves and kept the Johnnies scoreless for 58 minutes.

Stout (3-3-0) got on the board first four minutes into the second period when Jayson Honer (Fr, Duluth, Minn) scored his first collegiate goal in heavy traffic, taking an assist from Jeff DeFrancesca (Sr, Mt. Prospect, Ill).

Scott Sikkink (So, Chippewa Falls) scored his second goal in as many nights, dropping in the biscuit six minutes into the third period for the eventual game winning goal. Sikkink was assisted by Andy Wiesner (Jr, Rochester, Minn) and Cory Mozak (Fr, Sioux City, Iowa).

The Johnnies' (1-2-1) Dustin Mercado broke up Koenig's shutout with 2-minutes, 17-seconds left in the game.

St. John's outshot Stout, 32-27, with the Johnnies' Adam Hanna making 25 saves.

Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. to open the NCHA season, then will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Nov. 19.

AUGGIES SCORE QUICK GOALS, TAKE 6-3 WIN

MENOMONIE (November 11, 2005) - Augsburg College scored two quick goals in the first period and went on to take a 6-3 win over UW-Stout Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Auggies David Clements scored only a minute into the game on his way to a hat trick. Critter Nagurski added another goal in the seventh minute to take a 2-0 lead.

The Auggies (3-0-0) snagged another goal in the seventh minute of the second period before Stout got on the board. The Auggies' Joe Haehn scored 6-minutes, 13-seconds into the second, but Stout's Scott Sikkink (So, Chippewa Falls) answered back two minutes later, getting assists from Andy Wiesner (Jr, Rochester, Minn) and Justin Huth (Sr, Shakopee, Minn).

But Augsburg sewed the game up to close out the second period with three goals. Clements wrapped two goals around another goal by Nagurski, scoring the first at 10:52, and the second - a power play goal - at 19:47. Nagurski scored at 17:47.

The Blue Devils (2-3-0) did win the third period, scoring twice to take some solace. Mathew Grasseschi (Fr, Great Falls, Mont) scored his first collegiate goal at 10:51 of the final stanza and Huth closed up the games' scoring with 29 seconds remaining in the game. Andrew Bader (Fr, Beaverton, Ore) assisted on both goals, along with Sikkink and Josh Blair (Sr, Appleton).

The Blue Devils outshot the Auggies, 36-30. The Auggies' Tony Ciro had 33 saves, while Mike Stone (So, West St. Paul, Minn) picked up the loss with 13 saves, but allowed four goals. Mike Koenig (Fr, Lakeland, Minn) had 11 saves and allowed two goals.

BIG PLAYS POINTERS TOPPLE BLUE DEVILS IN FINALE

STEVENS POINT (November 12, 2005) - UW-Stevens Point used the big play(s) to end UW-Stout's season on a sour note, handing the Blue Devils a 38-26 loss at Goerke Field Saturday.

The Pointers (4-6, 3-4) attacked early when Brad Kalsow hauled in an 80-yard pass play from Brett Borchart on the Pointers' first offensive play of the game. The Pointers took a 14-0 lead with only 2-minutes, 11-seconds off the clock on a 47-yard interception return by Chase Kostichka during Stout's first drive.

Jesse Wendt (Jr, Chetek) hauled in a 41-yard TD pass from Keldric Stokes (Sr, Benton Harbor, Mich) to pull Stout (6-4, 3-4) to within 14-7 at 9:02 in the first period. Evan Larsen (Sr, River Falls) kicked a 25-yard field goal to make it 14-10 with 29 seconds left in the first quarter. A Dan Heldman 32-yard field goal two minutes into the second period extended the lead to 17-10.

Andy Reese (So, Lodi) set up Stout's next score, taking off on a 56-yard scamper to the Pointer 26 on the first play of the ensuing drive. Stokes hooked up with Chase Unbehaun (So, Chetek) for 10 yards, then tossed a 13-yard pass to fullback Sam Weber (Jr, Waverly, Minn). Following a two-yard loss, Stokes found Wendt for his second TD pass of the game, a 5-yard strike, to tie at 17 all going into half time.

Stout went three and out on their first drive of the second half but the Pointers didn't. The Pointers neeeded only five plays to score, with the drive capped off by a 56-yard Cody Childs run. The Pointers didn't wait long to score again, recovering a fumble on the following kickoff. One-two-three and the Pointers were in the end zone on a 19-yard pass play from Borchart to Eric Reible and the Pointers had a 31-17 lead six minutes into the half.

Larsen pulled Stout to 31-20 on a 27-yard field goal by Larsen that was set up by a Joe Seep (Sr, Reedsburg) interception in Stevens Point territory. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 31-26 in the fourth with a 15-play, 76-yard drive highlighted by a 25-yard pass play from Reese to Wendt down to the Pointer one. Reese got the call and plunged in for the one yard score at 9:27 in the period.

The Pointers put the game out of reach with 1:08 left in the game when Borchart completed a TD strike to Jacob Dickert. The drive started after LaRon Ragsdale intercepted Stokes. Ragsdale stopped Stout's last-ditch drive when he intercepted Stokes with eight ticks left on the clock.

Stout won the statistical battle, picking up 485 total yards, 210 yards on the ground and 275 yards in the air. The Pointers collected 398 total yards, getting 70 yards on the ground, 328 in the air.

Reese led all rushers with 138 total yards, to finish the season with 979 yards. Stokes passed for 204 yards, completing 17-of-28 passes. Wendt hauled in eight catches for 119 yards and two scores.

Borchart completed 19-of-35 passes for 328 yards, with Dickert snagging six passes for 126 yards, and Kalsow had five grabs for 138 yards.

Seep had three punt returns for 38 yards and finished the season with a punt return average for a school record 16.0 yards, breaking the mark of 15.2 yards set by Henry Waters in 1965. Larsen finished the season with 63 points and ran his career totals to 187 points, second on the all-time scoring list.

WEINSTEIN, OLSON RECEIVE WIAC WEEKLY HONORS

MENOMONIE (November 8, 2005) - Defensive back Rob Weinstein (Jr, Racine/Horlick) had 23 tackles and punter Brandon Olson (Sr, Eleva/Eleva-Strum) averaged 40 yards per kick in UW-Stout's contest with UW-Whitewater Nov. 5. Weinstein was named the WIAC defensive player of the week and Olson the special teams player of the week.

Weinstein provided a big bulk of the Blue Devils' defense, getting on 23 total tackles, forcing one fumble and getting an interception with a return of 18 yards. Weinstein had 10 solo tackles and 13 assisted tackles, one tackle for a loss and intercepted a pass on Whitewater's first drive of the game, getting the pick at the Stout 42 and returning it to the Whitewater 40. The Blue Devils converted the interception into a field goal, but Stout lost, 32-10.

On the season, Weinstein has four interceptions - double his career total coming into the season - and leads the team in tackles with 72.

Olson, who also received the Warren Bowlus/Burger King Academic Award at halftime, launched seven punts for 280 yards (40.0 y/punt) with a long of 57. Olson also placed two punts inside the 20.

Olson is averaging 35.5 yards per kick and has placed 18 punts inside the 20.

BLUE DEVILS PLACE 11TH AT MIDWEST REGIONAL MEET

PEORIA, Ill (November 12, 2005) - UW-Stout placed six of their seven runners in the top 100 at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional meet, Saturday at Detweiler Park in Peoria, Ill.

Krista Jahimiak (So, La Crosse) paced the Blue Devils with a 33rd place finish in a time of 22-minutes, 42.5-seconds, while Bridgette Crozier (So, Winona, Minn) was 48th (22:59.0). By placing in the top 35 runners, Jahimiak was named to the NCAA III All-Region Cross Country team. But no Stout runner advanced to the NCAA championships next week at Ohio Wesleyan. The top five teams advance and the top nine individuals whose teams do not advance will make the trip. Stout scored 291 points and placed 11th of 40 teams.

Stephanie Nichols (Jr, Chetek) was 65th (23:15.6), Christina Anderson (Fr, Crystal, Minn) 71st (23:25.3), Abbey Ring (So, Manitowoc) 74th (23:26.7), Katee Rosburg (Fr, Superior) 78th (23:36.4) and Michelle Lewis (Fr, Burnsville, Minn) 118th (24:38.4).

Washington University won the meet with 76 points. Four Wisconsin schools finished in the next four places - UW-La Crosse 99, UW-Stevens Point 125, UW-Eau Claire 194 and UW-Oshkosh 213.

HAENY TOPS BLUE DEVILS FOR THE FINAL TIME THIS SEASON

PEORIA, Ill (November 12, 2005) - As he has for every race this season, UW-Stout's Nate Haeny (Jr, Sauk Rapids, Minn) led the Blue Devils, this time finishing 46th at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regionals at Detweiller Park in Peoria, Ill, Saturday.

Haeny and teammate John Maresh (Sr, Bloomington, Minn) both had top 100 finishes. Haeny clocked in at 25-minutes, 58.5-seconds on the 8-kilometer course. Maresh placed 94th with a time of 26:56.4. But neither Haeny or Maresh qualified to the NCAA Championships next weekend at Ohio Wesleyan. The top five teams and the top seven individuals whose teams did not qualify advanced to run again this year. Stout finished 18th of 34 schools with 501 points.

Brett Heimstead (Sr, Savage, Minn) was 107th (27:08.3), Michael Heinen (Sr, New London, Minn) was 118th (27:23.9), Mark Kempen (Sr, Kaukauna) was 138th (27:50.2), David Schoenscheck (So, Omro) was 157th (28:13.1) and Jon Golem (So, Oshkosh) was 173rd (28:41.6).

UW-La Crosse won the meet with 42 points. UW-Oshkosh was second (49), North Central College third (140), Chicago, coached by former Stout coach Chris Hall, fourth (145) and Wheaton College fifth (147).

MCDERMID NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-CONFERENCE

MENOMONIE (November 8, 2005) - UW-Stout outside hitter Jenny McDermid (Jr, Oconto Falls) was an honorable mention pick to the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) volleyball team.

McDermid led the Blue Devils in hitting percentage with a .233, while pounding out 2.50 kills per game with a total of 315 in 126 games. McDermid, a two-sport standout in both volleyball and basketball, also finished with 28 solo blocks and 78 block assists for an average of 0.85 blocks per game.

The Blue Devils finished the season at 17-18 overall, 3-5 in the WIAC.

TWO PLACED ON ALL-WIAC SOCCER TEAM

MENOMONIE (November 9, 2005) - UW-Stout forward Michelle Lizotte (So, Racine) and midfielder Heidi Schultz (Sr, River Falls) were named to the 2005 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) soccer team.

Lizotte was the Blue Devils leading scorer this season, punching in eight goals and providing six assists for 22 points. Lizotte ranked in the top 10 in the WIAC in seven different statistical categories: seventh in points (22) and points per game (1.22); ninth in goals (8) and goals per game (0.44); sixth in assists (6) and seventh in assists per game (0.33); and led the league in game winning goals with five.

Lizotte was the WIAC offensive player of the week for games played Oct. 10-16 when she scored three consecutive game winning goals. For her career, Lizotte has 22 goals, 16 assists and 60 points.

Schultz was a vocal leader of the Blue Devils and was primarily a defensive midfielder. The Blue Devils finished the season tying a school record with 10 shutouts, tying a school record in goals allowed (12) and setting a school record for goals against average with 0.62. Schultz scored two goals - including the game winner on a penalty kick in the WIAC quarterfinals - and had three assists.

Schultz was named the WIAC defensive player of the week for games Sept. 12-18 after the Blue Devils ran their scoreless streak to over 360 minutes. Schultz, who started all 74 of the games during her career, wrapped up her career with 12 goals, 23 assists and 47 points. She was also a three-time academic all-region selection.

The Blue Devils finished the season at 10-3-5 overall, 4-1-3 in the WIAC and placed third in the regular season.
