BLUE DEVILS BOW OUT OF WIAC TOURNEY

RIVER FALLS - UW-Eau Claire scored two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat UW-Stout, 5-4, in the WIAC softball tournament, eliminating the Blue Devils, Saturday, May 1 in River Falls.

Stout (27-16) carried a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning when Eau Claire (26-16) scored two runs, then tacked on two more in the seventh inning on a double by Steph Farenbaugh.

Eau Claire took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Farenbaugh tripled in a run. Stout answered back in a big way in their half of the third when Kaela Wold (Jr, Altoona) cracked out a three-run home run. Courtney Zafft (So, Rochester, Minn) gave Stout the 4-1 lead with an RBI single to center field in the fifth inning.

Both teams knocked the ball around, with Stout pounding out 10 hits to Eau Claire's nine. Wold was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Zafft was 2-for-4. Farenbaugh, Emilee Planert and Shannon Wing each collected two hits apiece for the Blugolds.

The loss puts an end to one of Stout's most successful seasons ever. Only the 1995 (34-17) team earned more wins (34) and had a better winning percentage (.667). The 2004 team had a winning percentage of .628. The winner of the WIAC tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

BLUE DEVILS EXPERIENCE HIGH, LOW IN FIRST DAY OF TOURNEY

RIVER FALLS - Courtney Zafft  (So, Rochester, Minn) hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to give Stout a 6-4 win over UW-La Crosse in the first game of the WIAC Tournament, but the Blue Devils could not find their bats in the second round, falling, 6-2, to UW-Superior, in the second game, Friday, April 30 in River Falls.

With Stout trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Zafft delivered her first collegiate home run to push the Blue Devils up, 6-3, but clearing the bases. Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy) and Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona) drove in runs earlier in the inning to put Stout (27-15) on the board.

In the second round, Superior (30-7) jumped all over the Blue Devils in the first inning for five innings - aided by two errors - then added their final run in the second inning.

Stout finally got on the board in the third inning when O'Connell and Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) each drove in a run. Wold finished with three hits, while O'Connell, Caswell and Cassie Tock (Fr, Sparta) each had two hits.

Stout will play UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, May 1 at 9 a.m. in attempt to work their way back into the championship game through the loser's bracket.

BLUE DEVILS BOUNCE BACK FOR TWO WINS IN DELAYED TOURNEY

LA CROSSE - Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona) hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the eighth inning to give Stout a 2-0 win over UW-Whitewater,  Monday, April 26, in the first game of the delayed WIAC Cluster Tournament. Stout then finished off the tournament with a 3-1 win over UW-Platteville.

Neither Stout or Whitewater got much going early. Stout (26-14, 11-5) stranded runners on second base in the second and third innings, while the Warhawks (24-12, 10-6) left two on in the fourth. Stout left two in the sixth and both teams went down in order in the seventh.

Blue Devil pitcher Megan Donley (So, Fridley, Minn) got two groundouts and a strikeout to get out of the eighth. With two outs in the eighth, Melissa Coon (So, Cudahy) drew a walk, setting the stage for O'Connell's seventh round tripper of the year, this perhaps her most dramatic.

Donley tossed her seventh shutout of the year, but was outdueled in regulation by Whitewater pitcher Dana Jakoubek, who struck out 10. Jakoubek held Stout to only two hits, the home run to O'Connell and a lead-off single to Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire) in the second inning.

Heather Novalany (Jr, Cottage Grove, Minn) broke a scoreless tie in the Platteville game with a one-run double to right center in the fourth inning. Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) drove in the second run in the inning. Jamie Gorges (Jr, New London) doubled in Stout's final run in the fifth. Platteville (13-21, 3-12) scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning on a Blue Devil error.

Novalany had one of her strongest hitting games of the season, pounding two doubles in going 2-for-3. O'Connell was 3-for-4 with a double. Wold also had a double and eventually scored. Donley ran her record to 21-12 in her 29th complete game of the season.

The wins broke a four-game losing streak for Stout and the Blue Devils came up just short in their bid for the conference regular season title, finishing second, their highest finish in regular season play since the two-division WIAC returned to one division. Stout finished first in the West Division of the WWIAC in 1998 with a 7-1 record.

Kroening was 3-for-3 in the game, while Nielsen and Meinertz each lashed out two hits.
